Rose has always been here for me she's part of the family, she's like my second mom. She's seven years old and I can remeber the first day that my parents brought her home. I can remeber her first meeting with my birds and how she always use to herd me around the house when i was a younger teenager. During a thunderstorm she is right there on my bed beside me mainly cause we're both afraid T- storms. My dog and my birds are my life.

The only thing that I am scared of is when I move to Michigan my father is threatening to slaughter my ducks and my chickens so that they are not a "burden" to anyone anymore cause my father is a greedy "something something" !!! I don't get along with him at all.

I'm back from Imlay. This was my first swap meet. I was a little disappointed that there weren't more chicks-just one family and they didn't have anything I wanted. Lots of beautiful adult birds, though. I'd prefer chicks. I've heard too many stories of people buying sick adults and bringing cooties home to their flock.

How was the Charlotte meet?

Sorry Alphagamchick.....the swap meet, as you now know, was outdoors!! At least it wasn't raining. Guess I was thinking of another chicken meet we went to. Krisrose and I went to Charlotte, and it was all over with by the time we got there. Vicky said they sold out of almost everything. Heard there weren't many chickens there either. We were disappointed also cuz we couldn't find more chicks at the Imlay City one. Oh well....maybe next time....

Do swap meets that are later in the season have more chicks? I suppose that if it was indoors more folks would bring babies because they would have access to electricity.
I would have bought some hatching eggs one guy had---silkies, welsummers and a few others- ---but my bator is ahatchin' as we speak. Have 45 eggs in there. Three weeks ago I hatched 35 out of 42 eggs. I was pretty happy with that. I'm still trying to get rid of them. Have a friend coming over tonight to take some and have a few more people who are interested. They are mutts but I got some really funky combos out of the bunch.
I got to the meet about 7 this morn. The sun was out but you could see that dark storm front moving in. As it came closer the wind whipped up and it got a lot colder. At that point many people started leaving. I suppose it probably cleared up after that. Turned out to be a nice day after all.
I was pretty amazed at the number of birds there. Lots of ducks, peacocks, guineas, quail and some really lovely chickens. Maybe next year I'll hold off on getting so carried away with hatching my eggs and I'll buy some eggs there . Probably won't be any there next year!

Thank you, but that man has done so many bad and hurtful things to me its to late for him to be in my future. I am not going into detail cause I doubt you want to know but what is done is done and he can't change what has happend.

We got to the swap at 6:00 and we had to wait for everyone to get there:p People were still coming when we were leaving! I ended up getting a Silver Duckwing Cock and a pair of BR OEG that are gorgeous. We also got a silkie for my sister and some chukar partridge. And some little Silver duckwing chicks. Im happy:) Hope you all had good luck too:D

Frizzedhen, this Q is for you.

I read in some of the posts that you raise Frizzles - hence your name, obviously. I have a Frizzle Q for you. Last year, I purchased some Frizzle eggs and hatched some lovely chicks from them. But I noticed that when the chicks are feathering out they have bare spots where the feathers don't grow in and their skin looks flakey - not so with other breed birds. This year I have hatched some Sizzles with very frizzled feathers but their feathers have filled in quite nicely - no bare spots . My plain Frizzle chick is doing that weird feathering out like my last year's birds. Eventually, they all filled out just fine last year and they are very full. So is this how Frizzles feathers come in? It's kind of like their backs ar bare.
Thanks

If you breed frizzle to frizzle you get bad spots and bald birds because the feather shafts are brittle and snap off / break etc...

I have always read you need to breed frizzles with smooth feathered birds or you will have issues.

I read on another board that there is a higher death rate in frizzle x frizzle matings.

I have 3 frizzled chicks I hatched from eggs from Frizzledhen.... cute lil buggers!!! So far I am thinking 1 cockerel and 2 pullets but to be honest it's too soon for me to successfully sex...lol. At this point I think I will be trying to place the cockerel in a new home.... although I guess I could separate him out and put him with some other straight feathered gals.

Here is a copy and paste I found at another site:::::::

Here is some useful breeding information regarding the Frizzle....

HOMOZYGOUS FRIZZLE (FF)
The homozygous curly Frizzle (FF) has thin wispy feathers where the feather tip curls back towards the head and the edges of the feather curl in towards the center. These birds will be referred to as curlies.

Curly Frizzles have two frizzle genes (FF) which create narrow wispy feathers which are brittle.

HETEROZYGOUS FRIZZLE (Ff)
The heterozygous Frizzle (Ff) has broad feathers with the tip curled back towards the head. These are the exhibition type Frizzles.

Show-type Frizzles have one frizzle gene and one straight feather gene (Ff). They have broad feathers which curl back towards the head.

STRAIGHT FRIZZLES (ff)
Straight Frizzles (ff) have normal feathers which point towards the tail and follow the contours of the body.

Straight Frizzles have two straight feather genes (ff) and look like any other type of bantam.

Possible crosses

PARENTS OFFSPRING
Curly (FF) x Curly (FF) = ALL Curly (FF)
Curly (FF) x Frizzle (Ff) = 1 Curly (FF) : 1 Frizzle (Ff)
Curly (FF) x Straight (ff) = ALL Frizzles (Ff)
Frizzle (Ff) x Frizzle (Ff) = 1 Curly (FF) : 2 Frizzles (Ff) : 1 Straight (ff)
Frizzle (Ff) x Straight (ff) = 1 Frizzle (Ff) : 1 Straight (ff)
Straight (ff) x Straight (ff) = ALL Straight (ff)
The different phenotypes can be identified at 1 to 2 weeks after hatching.

Grammi, thanks for pointing this thread out to me! I am so geeked at how many folks from Mi are here, never expected this, but love it. We are in Wyoming, MI, just south of G.R., but have another place which we are hoping to move to soon. It's in Lake Co, about 80 miles north of here.
We got our chicks from the Family Farm and Home center on Plainfield Ave, north of G.R. after finding that everyone getting their chicks from the big place in Zeeland weren't getting them. At least not when they thought they would. There's another Family Farm place south of here in Wayland MI, and they have chicks and small animals too.
