I have a BSL who is acting crazy this morning. Squealing, squawking, and running toward me everytime she sees me. Cooing, clucking and squatting whenever she comes near.
Fed some mealworms to the bunch and this one wanted to squat and be petted instead of eating the treats. Followed me into the tent garage, jumped up on the hay bales...to be petted again.

Now that I'm in again, she is standing where she can see the back door and is making quite a ruckus. Then she goes back in the coop for a bit. And repeat.

I'm thinking that she is getting ready to lay her first egg.

\\Yeah I saw it! That is really cool. I am on the south end, near Bristol road.

I am so happy (my hubby just shakes his head silently laughing) my little EE sits on my shoulder! I have to get a pic tonight to post. My others are shy around me, and only come to me if I have treats. They actually beg in the evening, we have this whole routine. It's quite funny to see.

As for hawks, we have TONS! Since there is a bean field behind our neighborhood (right at the end of my back yard) the sit in the fence row. My coop is close to the house and quite shelterd, so they are safe there.

Hawks are starting to come thru at our place as well. Yesterday a young cooper's hawk was perched on the A-frame licking his chops at the lavender ameraucanas. We also have a ton of turkey vultures, like 50-75 that roost in the woods next to our property. Interestingly, the chickens know the difference and don't pay any attention to the big, low-flying vultures. But they run and hide at the sight of a hawk!

Farmer Andy, I am one of those who feel that Sevin (carbaryl) is a toxic chemical that has no place on animals that come in contact with people. We find out more all the time about the long-term effects of exposure to chemicals, even at very small amounts. Treat your birds only if they need it, and then use precautions against chemical exposure yourself. And keep in mind that if they are laying, that chemicals will be incorporated into the eggs as well.

How do you take "Care of" so much cider?? Does it all need refrideration? Can you leave it setting at room temp? a cool celler?
I bought a wine making kit, used it for one gallon and never touched it again, too complicated. I have plums, cherries, currants, rhubarb, and now one Honey Crisp apple tree.

Opa, I would honestly hope that you are not wearing clothes from the 70s... That would be so sad... LOL. I do not think there is a place for that much polyester... I am pushing 40... Those would be some old duds!

My cluckers seem to be sticking to the good hidey bushes today. Sticking close. I am guessing that means its time to invest in a covered run...

Olive, I would say that hoops would be great to get more out of the garden, but I do have a liimited sun area, adn its 10:30 am now, and the sun is almost gone now from the only place that I can grow. It gets great sun April thru the end of August... Unless I take out the neighbors house... BUT I don't think Earlene would like that too much. I figure I need to find someone affordable to take out some trees in back. Problem there is they need to be insured, since my insurance says that if we do it, and the tree comes down on the house, then they won't cover it. BUT if we hire a tree removal company and it comes down, between their ins and my ins its covered. What a rip. But I guess I can understand that... I might take a tree into my house on purpose so I can get some things different that I can't afford renovations on! LOL. Just kidding...

Not really.
