Fuzzy....congrats to your DH. I like your set up you have for your drop boards...looks very simple to clean!! Nice looking birds too, your Orps look about the same size as mine.
The female wants nothing to to with me, so spooky.
But the male is a bit mellow, doesn't try to get away as bad as the female. But he is huge!
And he was only hatched this year! The female is still very young, so she still have lots of more growing to do, I think.
Nope. She might put on a little weight but the hens are WAY smaller than the drakes. I'd put my drake at 10 to 12 pounds and the hens closer to 5. That's just the way they are. She'll always give you a lot of space but mine have warmed up enough to follow me around the yard.
I can't have any, but man o man would i love to have some of those crowers! They do look kinda like crows.... I always liked pestering the crows when i was younger! They have a kind of quiet dignity about them. I need to find a way to make some money if i want more birds; my hubby has cut me off!
I guess i have enough for plenty of eggs for us next summer, anyway. But what i'm secretly hoping is that my hens will set the eggs, now they will be going into their 2nd year and i got the little cochin for insurence....
In answer to previous question about Mr. Fluffers, yes he is a salmon faverolle. He's my drag queen as my sis calls him. Said she'd never known a rooster could have "hair" before. AND BLONDE TOO! LOL. Hes a great roo. I hope to have more like him in the future, but in the mean time, he'll be the one and only big guy for a long time. The two little guys are only 3 pounders, so they can stick around. FOR A WHILE.
Thanks for all the pictures posted here......LOVE to look at various breeds! Welcome to G.M. also.
We are now somewhat educated on various diseases and infections that chickens can get and hopefully we are now able to keep our flocks healthy to the best of our ability. They are like our kids...we feed and care for them but we are not 100% in control of their fate.
I just did a google on Strep Throat since DH has it. Contagious. I know I got it often as a kid...hope I don't get it now. We will stay home from church today.
We purchased from Radio Shack one of those driveway alerts about 3 wks. ago. Two years ago when DH was away on a hunt trip for 10 days....I had knocking at my door about sunset. Since we live on a seasonal road in the midst of woods....it scared me. I had the doors locked already and went upstairs to look out the window for a car. There was none. SO...I kept watching and then saw two camoflaged hunters (armed of course) on the porch. I opened the window and asked what they wanted...they said they were lost and I gave them directions on how to get out. It is a creepy feeling to be alone and have people suddenly pop out of nowhere. The alert will give me a headsup...assuming they come thru the drive and don't cut thru the woods to arrive here. What is cool is the deer trigger it. Yesterday morning the alert beeped 8 times in a row. We find the deer track when we go for our walks. It is pretty nifty.
Well...have a nice day everyone. I heard the weather was going to be nice on Thanksgiving. Another thing to be Thankful for.
to all the new readers and posters. This mild weather has been a blessing and 49 on Thanksgiving will be GREAT! we will have about 30 some up to the house. Every one brings dishes to pass and we usually have enough to feed 10 more.
Have a blessed Sunday
One of my 4 young light brown egg layers finally got her mojo working yay! Still only getting about 4 eggs from 15 girls, but signs of hope.
Fife I used to live on a quiet country road, and one night watched a car stop in front of the house, then back up so that it was hidden from the house by an old garage next to the road and just sit there. Set all my alarm bells off. I called my friend/landlord/neighbor, and he drove over to see what they were up to. They didn't have any good reason for being there but left and never came back. Very creepy when you live alone.
