I did not have to get rid of my flock after all and I have not "flown the coop"...yet! A girlfriend of mine who MAY want to raise chickens is testing the waters by caring for my flock this winter! So my RV coop will be pulled to her place around the last week of January and we will be headed for Florida. I feel so much better knowing that no other chickens are on her farm. Of course there are still things that could go wrong but I'm thinking "positive". I only have two laying but I got a huge one yesterday!! All is well here on Flowerhill Farm....for now. Can't believe how mild weather has been this early winter.
I did order 6 new pullets from Brkuk when I thought I was going to have to sell my flock. I am getting 3 lavender Ameracaunas and 3 Black Copper Marans. I will use my RV coop to put these new ones in once I am back in Michigan and have cleaned out the RV coop and sanitized it. I will have these new girls wayyyyyyyyyyyyyy far away from my coops so there will not be any issue with one flock giving the other any health issues. After 20 days I plan on taking one of the new girls and one of my old girls and putting them in a small coop I use for broody hens. This coop will also be placed far away. After another week of those two together...if all is well with no health issues...THEN, I will put the flocks near each other put in separate pens. That is the plan. I will then have 3 Lavender Ameracaunas, 3 Black Copper Marans, 6 Jersey Giants and 4 English Orpingtons! I plan on hatching eggs for myself with the English Orpingtons and then next late fall will sell all except the young English Orps...I think. Depends on if we are going to Florida again and if I have a caretaker. Oh the anticipation!! I can understand Raz getting antsy!
I have been attacked by the ducks...I cleaned their coop out, and they got mad at me because they got in before I was done refilling with straw, so I kept tossing in handfuls and one of the attacked me! Rotten duck.
I checked on the chickens in the coop, to make sure all was well. They were still a little freaked out after the rooster catch. I hope they are not to stressed out and still give me eggs in the morning. Lol. Its going to be weird not hearing 5 roos not sounding their presence. I don't know how Mr. Fluffers is gonna handle no competition. Wonder how my garage refugees are going to handle going back to the big coop... Oh that will be fun...
