Raz, your hens are young egg laying machines right now. Next fall, you won't be so lucky. You'll be dealing with moulting then, too. My hen that I was saying was laying every day..... now she's broody!

First Muffin and now Blueberry. Hopefully the two splashes will start soon. Still have my BR that's laying every day. Shhh, not to say it too loud or she'll go broody.

Or you could be dealing with chicken and dumplings and more young laying machines. Just sayin'. There are options.

I will remain optmistic in all things chicken.

ETA: optimism pays off...all 6 girls laid today, no heat, no added light. I also think I found the source of the "frostbite" on the combs.

Well I just looked and realized its been about two months since I logged in - wow! My birds are doing great without heat although they do have a FS light set for 14 day-light hours with the hens. My other critters are making do also. Still hoping HBHen is going to have a few Icelandic chicks for me come sprng, Also, Olive - how long from poult to freezer for the Narrs? I'm still considering raising a few but not sure about weight gain vs. keeping thru a winter. And Fife, have you flown the coop yet? I'd hate to leave my flock and start new, however, my in-laws have a place in Sarasota and we went for a week last winter - may have to do that again! I have a girl that will house sit and she loves all the animals (and free cable)
