IMNTBCHO, cases of brutal animal abuse that include seeking out an animal to torture like this should have much stricter sentencing guidelines to begin with. It is one of the most consistent indicators of future human-to-human brutality there is. It is highly likely, regardless how much time these boys spend on the inside, they will strike again and next time it won't be an animal. If anything putting them in for a few years now will only harden them and they will be more dangerous later. Death row would be a more appropriate place for them.
Agree 100%. Those are some SICK individuals.

I agree! Even the Bible has laws regarding wounding and killing other people's livestock.

Olive, you're funny!

Okay, I'm going to do it. I don't want to but it has to be done. I'm posting my BPR roo on craigslist but I'll ask here first.

He's about 9 months old, not human aggressive, vigilant protector, sweet to his girls, and very handsome but not SQ. I would love to give him to someone I trust to give him a good home with a flock of his own to manage. I'm in West Michigan and would be willing to travel a reasonable distance (UP, you guys are out!) to find him a good home. PM me if you are interested.

Beautiful rooster.

Snowflake, You didn't do ANYTHING besides stick them into the ground??? I tried rooting some other ones this fall, but no luck. they made leaves, but no roots.......? Was it cold when you did this? maybe mine were too warm...

Nova, Maybe you caught it in time. Sounds like she's still spunky, so that is a good sign. They will eat grit instead of food, but that is usually something that is from a hen being low on the pecking order and not getting enough food. I had one do it. As far as vent gleet goes, i've never heard of it, but are you absolutely sure that that hen don't just have diarrhea? I had one who had it for a couple weeks after i wormed her, and i fed her mostly the manna pro show bird/game bird supplement for a few days until it cleared up. the supplement has stuff to help firm them, plus probiotics. Sometimes using meds will wipe out the natural digestive bacteria in the stomach. If nothing else you could try yogurt?

Well, I have to wait for her to roost again to check her. She will not let me near her today.

Olive, I so agree with you. I don't understand what kinda of thinking leads to that, or how those things were able to continue such brutality. Those poor cows... It makes me cry. I would derive some sort of pleasure taking a baseball bat to them. Oh wait... Their life's have more value than just a cow. I don't think so. The court might but I do not. I am thinking a good old biblical stoning. I better shut up.

https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/421044/drippy-dirty-butts This is what i came up with when i looked into "vent gleet" it is apparently a yeast infection, caused by stress/ antibiotics? So it is possible mine had it too, although that one is not quite a year old. They say it's not contagious. Could be why your hen had soft eggs (if that was her) cause she wasn't digesting proper. There's also constipation/pasty butt that causes similar symptoms, so i pasted the thread. There's ideas for treating both. Couldn't hurt to have probiotics on hand, on account of your impacted crop hen....? Dawg always recommends buttermilk for probiotics. He says it sticks with them better than the yogurt.

As far as those kids go, i can not imagine what they were thinking. Alcohol is no excuse. Sounds like they did it to make a point to the farmer, who one of them was mad at. What if they would have just went straight to the farmer's family? They were sending a very clear message to him and his family. If these kids are not potential killers, i don't know who is! I am proud of that judge for making a stand against the softer punishment that she was being advised to hand out.

Just had a wild idea. Maybe I'll get rid of the chickens altogether and just eat duck eggs. I've always liked ducks more anyway. Someone talk me down.

I had ducks last year. They were so messy, and wasted the feed, and I had to herd them in the coop EVERY NIGHT in all kinds of weather!!! I had to clean out and fill their water tub EVERY DAY!! Never again I will have ducks. I only have a pair of Muscovy now, and they are messy enough. Is that good enough to talk you down? :p P.S I was the only person who was willing to eat duck eggs, so I was stuck with dozens and dozens of eggs coming out of my ears.

Hehehe. Maybe.

We've had ducks. Runners, Rouens, Pekins and 'Scovies at various times. I actually found them to be less upkeep than the chickens, though.

Of course, I'm one of those crazy people who adore geese, too. Love my geese. I think I just have a fondness for the waterfowl in general.
