oh, completely forgot why I came here...

I did the crop thing on my Veena. Feels soft, a bit empty. She is picking at stuff. She is showing interest. She does have pasty butt tonight... Going to get the buttermilk for her... Just hope she gets better... I guess I amortized cuz I have no vet help tilll Monday...

Just now caught up on the forum. My new computer is meesed up so it needs to go to Geek Squad for some magic. Reverted back to the old laptop, which is steam-powered and very slow. A full minute to load each page of the forum (I timed it).

I hope they can fix my computer, ALL of my homework is on that machine.
some times I hate computers, hope they can save your homework, and hope your week improves.

Oh em gee! My eggs are just about due to hatch! I have three olive eggers and twelve duck eggs (OE eggs set a week after the ducks so they'd hatch at the same time) that are going to start hatching this Friday! Lockdown time here! The first hatch of the year is so exciting!

I will be keeping a few female ducks for eggs, while all the drakes will for sure become duck a l'orange. My father wants a few ducks for eggs (even though he doesn't live near me, he does visit often) and nearly threw a fit when I said all ducks were being raised to go to freezer camp! He loves duck eggs for scrambling and baking, hah. At least that means I can make friends with a few of the ducklings :D
I was in the feed store one day and the guy in front of me was saying he had a customer that was allergic to eggs but could eat duck eggs with no problem.

Snowflake, You didn't do ANYTHING besides stick them into the ground??? I tried rooting some other ones this fall, but no luck. they made leaves, but no roots.......? Was it cold when you did this? maybe mine were too warm...

Nova, Maybe you caught it in time. Sounds like she's still spunky, so that is a good sign. They will eat grit instead of food, but that is usually something that is from a hen being low on the pecking order and not getting enough food. I had one do it. As far as vent gleet goes, i've never heard of it, but are you absolutely sure that that hen don't just have diarrhea? I had one who had it for a couple weeks after i wormed her, and i fed her mostly the manna pro show bird/game bird supplement for a few days until it cleared up. the supplement has stuff to help firm them, plus probiotics. Sometimes using meds will wipe out the natural digestive bacteria in the stomach. If nothing else you could try yogurt?

nope, just water well for the first week or so. I have clay soil so I often add some extra black dirt. Usually plant in the spring, If I plant in summer I try to give a little shad to the plant till it has had time to root out. I owe most of my success to Alice's stuff. She has given me lots of house plants and they multiply,

I also have the hen with the problem. I have trimmed the feathers (cut out poo) around her vent. I have been giving them garlic water, ACD water, and lots of probiotic. I use kefir, witch has more probiotics then yogurt. Her come is pinking up some and I think she is finally gaining some wait. I feed her extra egg in the corner of the coop in the AM when I open the poop door,...

As far as those kids go, i can not imagine what they were thinking. Alcohol is no excuse. Sounds like they did it to make a point to the farmer, who one of them was mad at. What if they would have just went straight to the farmer's family? They were sending a very clear message to him and his family. If these kids are not potential killers, i don't know who is! I am proud of that judge for making a stand against the softer punishment that she was being advised to hand out.

just reading about this made me sick. Can't understand how any one could do that to any animal. Too bad the bull wasn't a little mean, he might have been able to mess the kids up a bit.

Oliv, I did get a random fecal but I am pretty sure I got some of hers in the bag both times.... when I looked at the pics of gleet they keep talking about rash and sores on the vent so maybe that isn't it?? her skin looks clean. She may be just taking a long time to come back. she sat for 2mo. on eggs this summer before she got one to hatch. she mothered that baby for 3 mo. then we had parasites, it was a lot for a 4yr old hen but she is a tough old bird. she does look a little pinker around the face &comb.Maybe I will giver her a little longer. I really can't afford to take another hen to the vet, cost me almost $200 so far .I have learned a lot about what to look for with things I hadn't heard of before.

feel like I should go back & read the days posts again, I know I am forgetting something
Fenton congrats.

Hey Olive!

My goslings will be coming around the end of March, and since I do not have to feed the geese grain, what do I feed the day-old goslings? I have given my previous geese goose starter when they were day-olds, and they were on it until about 4 months old, then I had switched to laying mash. But this time, I want to start the goslings right with very little grain as possible.Thanks.

Nova - I hope your hen does better soon!

Raz - Some advise I got while getting my MBA. Always save your homework on a flashdrive and email important papers/homework to your gmail account for backup. I had my computer crash on me halfway through my program but I was lucky to have someone give me that tip before my the tragic end of my notebook.

I got 3 eggs today. Just the EE's and a BR feel like laying these days. I think they are too distracted by Big Boy and his "advances" to lay eggs for me. Here he is just about to give me a big raspy crow :)

I'm definitely not going to advise you to take her to the vet. I'm not one to spend any more on a bird than its net worth. I will say -- and you're probably already expecting it -- however, that random FECs are not, CANNOT, be accurate. Period. No ifs ands or buts about it. Even if you DID get some of her droppings in the bag FEC results are reported relative to the overall load. Mixing her fecal matter with fecal matter of other chickens who do not have parasites (if that's the case here) skews the results. It's one of my biggest pet peeves with veterinarians. Because they should know better and they advise it anyway. Most are woefully under-educated in parasite management and very few stay up to date on new developments.

Pale comb, weight issues and diarrhea are classic signs of an overwhelming parasite load. I would worm her with ivermectin -- administer it directly to her, do not depend on her to get her fair share from a feed through or in-the-water method. If that doesn't help, then I'd cull.

Weeds, grass, spinach, lettuce, kale, whatever greens you can get your hands on. At the end of March at least some of the early weeds should be out -- chickweed, maybe some lambs quarter, whatever you can find is fine. You'll still need to supplement them with a complete feed to ensure they're getting a balanced diet, but give them as much greens as they'll eat. And you will be surprised by how much they'll eat. ;)

Hello all-

My little egg is going into lockdown soon. Due on Sunday. I will have another lone chick if it hatches. Out of 24, one isnt bad, huh?

And I have eggs enroute from Brown City..one of you, no doubt. From ebay, though. i just cant remember who here lives in Brown City area that has showgirls and silkies. Only six eggs enroute...and of course the weather went to crap, again. Its the risk I take doing ordering in the winter.

RaZ sorry about your computer. Many moons ago, before I learned the importance and necessity of backing ALL my work up on a thumb-drive..my computer crashed and had a many-months long project trapped inside it...and I had to start over. ALL OVER. Since then, all work goes on a thumb-drive.

Hope everyone is having a good night- and Nova, hope your hen is doing better.

Just having the raw data on a flash drive doesn't help much when the software to run it is on the crashed computer. And the worst part of that is the possibility that the computer comes back without those programmes. They are just too expensive to buy another license.

If you still have the original licence, you should be golden. I had this computer I am on crash on me. I put in new boards and hard drives, reloaded the windows software, and it automatically told me it was possibly counterfeit. Well, no, I had the original license, so was able to contact Microsoft service, and they issued me new codes, because I still has the original. I just explained what happened... So, maybe?? I hope thats your case... Worth a try at least.

I am thinking of worming my girls and Mr. Fluffers and Roger. I do preventative, but I think that maybe since it winter, I can just shut the light source off, so instead of the 13 hrs they are getting now, they'll only get the 10 hours we are having of natural for a few weeks, feed them back any eggs they lay... What is the best? The type that goes in the water or the ivermectin paste? I have just seen it at TSC but I could not remember what type you all have said to go with. I know I can paste them all easy enough. Thats a night time thing. AND I can also give each a treat with it on it. LOL. They are suckers for fresh bread. LOL. I have not had sign of parasites at all. Or should I just stick with the preventives I already use? ACV, pumpkin seeds, ect... I may just wait till I am sure Veena has recovered...

I have chicks Mom... Could steal one from Skeeter... It'll be a faverolle/ee/or cochin mutt.. LOL You can't have my Roger/Buffy chick.

It is a very bad idea to administer anti-parasitic medication to your flock without good reason. And no, because it will make you feel good is not a good reason.
