SJ3364,

THANK YOU VERY MUCH. HOW EASY YOU MAKE IT APPEAR. I WILL BE TRYING THE LESSONS/INSTRUCTIONS GIVEN SO CLEARLY. THANKS AGAIN

I've been following all the discussion about crop problems and worms. I am new to all this. How frequently do chickens have problems with their crops? Is it something that you routinely check for?

In my almost 10 years of chicken raising, I had never had a hen die from crop issues for I never had any issues with crops, just egg-bound issues from hatchery stock hens.

I only noticed it because she was acting distressed. Puffed up, huddling in a ball. I first thought it was related to the shell-less egg. But when I caught her, I felt the hard lump in her crop. Otherwise I would not have known had I not been paying attention to my chickens and not known their normal behaviors.

you can take fecal checks of birds to your vet for looksees a few times a year, of individual birds, or random checks, for worm issues.

before Veena, I have had only2 other issues. An egg bound hen and an inflamed blizzard that required antibiotic treatment. I look at my birds a P.W.B. OR, pets with benefits. I will take a bird to the vet if I am worried over a contagion... My vet sees EVERYTHING. And he is reasonable. Unfortunately he is gone on vacation this week. But I have the best resource at my finger tips. The people of BYC and the friends here on the MI thread to help with good sound practical advice.

That sounds scary! Fire up your snow blower for that one.

Once my rhubarb is up you'll find snake nests in there - every year! The best snakes are the Hog-Nose which flattens it's head and strikes while hissing and snarling. The only problem is they are harmless and fun to catch. Easy too, if approached they roll over and play dead. Boys never grow up, at least not this one.
