I am getting tired just reading about all you ladies do! I am a slug compared to you all!

Sarah!

But you'll be doing all this later in the year when you restart your chicken keeping too! And, if I get lucky and Skatter does go broody, I will have pure silkies you can possibly snag. Oh, and cochin bantam/fluffers mixes. LOL. Lovely lovely mutts. LOL

What a long and frustrating day at school. I can't wait to be done with this nonsense.

I left early so I could swing by a nursery and pick up a few screening trees. I certainly did not want the big box arbourvitae but something similar to block old Crabby's view of my yard. Of course the Weeping Hemlock that I would have liked to had were $350...EACH! So I settled for 4 Thuja plicata which will serve as a sight block and provide shelter for the wild birds. Not exactly what I wanted but I am short of cash and time.

The ordinance guy comes tomorrow morning and several people have offered to take my hens into "day care", but I am going to lock them in the coop/garage and keep it as dark as possible. I'll go out in a few minutes and block off the outside access hole. I also had the idea of getting up early and bringing them in the house. I think they would be OK in the bathtub for a few hours. What do you think?

I also got some advice from a legal assistant that I should not allow the guy into my yard but I said I already agreed to let him look. So I was advised not to say anything without an attorney present. I'll have to think about how to be cooperative without actually saying anything.

Well, I'm home from Florida. Had a great time and was bummed that it was over so soon. I am ususally ready to come home by the time the vacation is over, but not this time. My ex-husband's sister and her husband live in a huge and very beautiful home with all the trimmings. We spent the days boating in the Gulf, exploring and even went to a fashion show and the evenings around the pool and hot tub. It was awesome. But, there's no place like home and your own bed!

My neighbor took great care of the dogs and chickens and everyone was glad to see me when I got home, especially my neighbor! I had also asked a 12 year old friend to come over and fill the water and clean the poop boards so my neighbor didn't have so much to do. I guess the second day he came over Joe, my rooster, trapped him in the run and he had to call his brother to come over and chase Joe away so he could come out. I'm sorry but

! Good thing he had his cell phone on him. I had told him if Joe got aggressive to hold the broom or rake out and he wouldn't come near. He forgot that part. I'm sure by the time his brother got here Joe was out in the woods with the girls and his help wasn't needed. I guess Joe needs to go to freezer camp, but he's such a good protector of his girls, I hate to do it.

Gone a week and behind 1350 posts!!! No way I'm going to catch up with all of them, hope I didn't miss too much action. So, welcome to any and all newbies, congrats on any new hatches or births, my condolences to anyone who has lost a loved one, human or animal, and Mom, hope your surgery went well and you are recouperating OK. It's good to be home.

I understand that treadmills make great clothes racks.
They really really do. At least mine does, for the time being.

Also My mom lived up north the last several years, and she came face to face with one while getting my youngest sis on the bus. Didn't have her walk to the corner after that!!! (Don't quote me, but i think that was in Alpena) Luckily the dog scared it away by barking.

That's where I'm from, Alpena. :) Grew up there, never saw any cougars. Although that would have been totally awesome.

my cat think's he's a door stop......

This made me laugh out loud.

OH yea, and by the way, I'm gonna put straw out in my coop when I'm finished with it...can someone tell me where I can buy a bale or 2 of straw in the Lansing area? I've seen a couple ads on craigs list but they seem kinda far away..

Finally. My computer decided to act wonky today, but it's back on track now. I lost everything I wanted to reply to originally so I'll generalize with sorry for any losses and love the chick pics.

I let the chickens out early today and they were very eager to be out and about. As soon as I opened the coop door it was a stampede of feathers as they all ran out. After that, they spent some time digging around the compost pile and pig pen until DH came out to take care of the pigs. They thought DH was bringing them out a treat as well and stalked him all over the yard while he worked. DH wasn't overly amused by their attention as much as I was.

It is my fault, I admit, since I'm usually taking a treat out to them when I go outside. It was funny, too, when I was making cookies this afternoon. Every time I went near the window, they would spot me and come running over. Nothing like a bunch of chickens looking up at you with a 'well? throw us a treat already!' look on the faces. Silly, silly chickens.

eta- our 2 bantam girls are laying every day now and since we had 10 my daughter decided to make mini deviled eggs tonight. They were too cute and very good. I told her the next family thing we go to we are going to bring them just to see what everyone thinks of the little egg bites.
