If you have a public shop for your winery you may already be covered/aware, but if not -- and maybe even if so -- you need to think about liability before you agree to host something on your private land. 100+ people is a lot of people and a lot of risk for mishap. Remember it's not just MI BYC regulars that show up, but people are talking about advertising on CL, putting up fliers, etc to pull in the general public as well, which increases the risks.

Agreed. I'm not sure that advertising the event outside of BYC, friends, and family would be a great thing but that maybe just me. I think it would take away from the family-reunion-type thing we got going....that, and I'm selfish.

I want to keep you crazy folks all to myself.

Yeah there were some folks, not on BYC at CS, squeezing chickens and blatantly lying to our faces about what they planned to do with the birds. I know we eat them sometimes.. but don't lie about it when asked. I was honestly a bit nervous leaving mine unattended. Not to mention, problems with people we really don't know, could increase the liability, or our chances never to be allowed at a park again.

I think a page dedicated with event duties, is a great idea! Matter of fact, I'll volunteer to get it started!

If you have one up north, I'd love to go, though I would just attend and not bring or buy anything that couldn't be packed in a trunk or bike!

Thanks. If it is right off 75 that will be an easy one. Yup. Would you go Olive ?

Yo Olive. Wake up. Quit daydreaming about them Uggo's.

LOL! How dare I not check in every five minutes!!!!

Umm... it depends. I know, so helpful. It would just depend on when it is and what kind of harvest season we have this year. Normally late August to Thanksgiving is a no-go, but we'll see... wheat's already turning and it's not even July. And it's not like I can predict any of it, so don't plan around me... but you already know that. I'd say cross your fingers for rain that day, but I think that'd kind of ruin the picnic, too.

IF we are not in the fields, and IF it's not on the same day as anything else (kids have weekend sports in the fall, but those only go for just so long) ... absolutely!

I didn't see the donation jar either! I'd be more than willing to send some $$$ though. Just PM me where. I, too didn't event stop to think about the fact that the park may have cost something. Duh! I'm so sorry.

So, I have a roo issue that I'm hoping you all can advise me on. I ended up with two EE roos(supposed to have been pullets). They are 14 weeks old now and the dominant roo is terrorizing all the girls. I tried telling him they weren't ready for that kind of attention yet but he's a bird brain and didn't get it. :p So, is this normal roo behavior? Will he mellow out or would I be better off to cull him out? I don't NEED these two Roos but they are pretty. I realize they will mostly just be eating up my feed. He bit ME the other day too! Then stood there as we both were in shock I think. I smacked him and he ran off. Sheesh!

Well I got the surprise of my life this morning when I was out at 6:45a.m. feeding the chickens. Here's a short version. As I'm just finishing up I turn to grab my wagon and I see a shadow rounding the big coop. Thought my DH came out for something. WRONG! It was my neighbor lady and she came unglued on me, crying, pleading & all, telling me she is a nervous wreck and is going to have a heart attack over my roosters crowing.(No she is not elderly she is a middle aged 50 something fruit loop and seems quite healthy.) She proceeds to tell me that she is at her wits end. She said she doesn't know of anyone who would like his crowing except for me. I said "my children enjoy it as well." She said she can't take it anymore, she's at her wits end and I need to do something.( Get rid of them? Ah NO ) I apologized that he annoys her but I told her that I like the crowing, it's his form of communication and that is what roosters do....dogs bark, cows moo. As I stood there quietly waiting for a reply she continued to ramble on a bunch of BS which lead to her saying that I'm not going to listen to anyone, it's no use in talking to me, that I'm gonna do what I want to, blah, blah, blah, blah. I politely told her that it's my right and perfectly legal for me to have a rooster & chickens if I choose and I choose to have them! She then stomped off across the yard and as she's stomping away yells to me that if I don't do something she's gonna shoot him, that I'm gonna come home and find him dead because I drove her to it! Trying really hard to restrain my mouth I then told her that maybe she should take a pill or two .I didn't say another word, just turned my back and continued to finish up. I know my rights and what's legal and not for my location and zoning. I live in an area that is zoned AG, I have acreage and I'm with in my MRTF rights. Needless to say, I called our township zoning guy who I know on a personal basis. Mind you, I double checked all the rules before getting chickens so I knew what his reply was gonna be but did it to tell him of the threat and just to be 100% sure. Yup, just as he told me before I'm perfectly fine.

Sooo.....if she approaches me again I'm just gonna tell her nicely that I'm within my rights and perfectly legal and that all I can do help her is pray for her. Why do I have to have a fruit loop for a neighbor!!!! The lord is testing me on how nice I can be about the whole thing I guess! I'd really like to tell her to go fly a kite!

Chicken Stock Ideas: I like them all and would be very willing to my share of the work. I also like the suggestion of having 2...one early Summer & one in the Fall. We could have the one in a southern location and one in a northern location as some folks suggested! Makes for fair travels for everyone.

Ummm That's right. How DARE you

Yup I know about the crops. Wheat is all yellow around here. If we don't get rain soon the beans will be no good. My best friend works at a livestock yard and she said on Sat. 2nd cutting hay was $5.10 a bale.
ep.gif
1st cutting was $4.00 a bale and crap hay brough $3.00 and something a bale.

I would write a letter to her, make two copies and send it to her certified. I would include:

- details of the interaction
- details of your conversation with the zoning officer following the interaction
- mention of trespassing laws and a request that she refrain from entering your property
- mention of it being illegal to shoot your rooster on your property
- mention of it being illegal to threaten people
- mention that her threats of using a firearm for harm to your animals makes you fear not just for the safety of your animals, but also yourself and your children on your property
- your intent to pursue the full action of the law should she choose to proceed with her previous threats or should she choose to make more including a PPO if she continues to threaten you

Just kindly remind her she chose to live in an AG area and offer her some ear plugs.

CROWS: we are having such a bad time this year. They were hauling off our eggs, up to 8 a day, and now they are getting the ducklings. "MGSU" built a ladder trap, but so far, they aren't having any of it. We even put one of the "kills" in it - no joy. They even go into the goathouse to eat the goat food. Silly goats, letting them in like that. Anyone got any ideas?
I have had three friends this year who have lost full size chickens to ravens. I have lost two that I am thinking may be crow related. 1muttsfan suggested hawk and it got me thinking about the crow/raven problems. They do have a great memory. I can be out yelling at them and they just hang around. DH goes out with the gun and they are gone in seconds. Maybe that's where the scare crows come from.

It would be great to have a CS farther north!!
