I don't think that I could advise you as to which cake would be the best one to take to the fair. Now if you send one of each to me, I'll be glad to eat them and then give you an honest opinion based on over sixty years of cake eating. I am very experienced and have always considered cake to be an excellent choice for breakfast. Of course in goes well with the other meals and in between as well.

soomi. We are is SE Mi too. Only in Monroe County.

Where are you guys getting all this rain. Blow it down here please.
Our gardens are doing well. We got a late start due to overly wet gardens, but everthing is coming along fine. Corn is way past my knees, getting zuccini and summer squash, everything else is blooming and has mini little veggies growing on it, so far so good. Califlower and broccoli are behind due to the evil rabbits.

My spinach actually bolted while it was still very small. I never got any this year.

Stupid weather. It's cooling off even more by the end of the week too.

MJ: when we started w/chicks a farmer told us to use hay because it has some nutritional value (which you pionted out also) - so we have used hay for nesting boxes and also for the broodie gals....the eggs should begin hatching this week end - would you recommend that we switch the hay out for straw or shavings or leave the broodies and eggs alone for the time being and wait until after they've hatched? THANKS

My garden is doing just okay. I didn't plant any early stuff -- lettuce or spinach. But my beans should finally be blooming out. I've got some peppers on the plants and my tomatoes are bloomed out. Pumpkins are just sad! They should be big beautiful plants, but they are not! I'm glad it's not just me, though. Sounds like there is issues all over the state.

On another note -- To all those who sell their eggs, what do you charge? I charge $1.00/dozen and people are telling me that I am crazy (I know it's low). Just got a call from a guy who is in Midland (visiting from Traverse City. He's brought a basketball team to Northwood University.) and he was looking for eggs. He does have his own chickens back home and he sells them for $3.00/dozen. I don't think they'd go for $3.00/dozen here, but he and others have suggested I charge $2.00/dozen. What do you think? Thanks!

Back when I had extra eggs from my rocks and EEs, we sold them for $1 a dozen. Of course, my grandmother would pay up to $5 a dozen because she "could"... Everyone else loved the price. I know we didn't make anything on them, but it sure helped keep the fridge empty!

I live in Dewitt (north of Lansing) and sell my large eggs for $2.50/dz and med eggs for $2.00 - have NO problem selling eggs! My girls free range and they do not receive any medicated food...a BIG plus to most people who are willing to pay this price!

Me TOO ChickeeMomma!
I've added 6 11 wk old buff orpingtons to our flock - which I'm HOPING lay large eggs - they were recommended to me by many on this site!
That brings my total to 28! LOVE IT!
