Morning All - another beautiful day!
Our bantams are 10 wks old and TINEY TINEY TINEY _ I'm struggling with whether or not to keep them with my standard flock - I can't find the answer to this ? - at what age will they be fully grown?

Are you chickens all the same age? If I have standards and bantams the same age, I just raise them together. I don't allow standard roosters in the flock. They will injure bantams doing what roos do!

I don't intermix my flocks of different ages. Easier for me to keep track of culling and a biosecurity measure.

Hope this helps

Perhaps she torn her oviduct trying to pass an egg??
Usually my egg bound/internal layers take one to four weeks to die. She could of had this problem a little longer than you realize. The limp may have been your only clue something was going wrong. When the hens left leg is not working right then it could be a sign she is an internal layer. All of mine that have died end up with some problem with the left leg, from not being able to use it at all to just a limp. I believe it is the swelling and/or infection that is damaging the nerves.
Sorry about the loss of your hen

I've blended the 2 hens (standard)which raised the bantams (from fertilized eggs from MSU) - The bantams are so small....what I'm trying to get an idea of is how large they will get - I've read that they will be 1/4 the size of a standard chicken...is this correct? Thanks -

Yes the bantams are about 1/4 of the standards.

Hey everyone! We are back from our camping trip, it was awesome!! We went up to St. Helen, my stepdad's family has a cabin there. Three of us brought campers and a tent to make room for all of us. There were 4 families plus my mom and step dad, and 12 kids from 4 to 19, only my 20 year old couldn't make it, he had to work and had class on a holiday weekend! We had so much fun, it was so relaxing, I needed that!!

Only bummer, came home to animals with no food and water, that does NOT make me happy!!

So, I will be looking for another person obviously, but it really is not that hard!! I have detailed instructions, everything was marked, but even if she fed them the wrong food, I wouldn't have cared, as long as they had been fed and had water!!

I got lots done and even had time for a wonderful visit with hillbillyhen. She has the most beautiful home and chicky's It was great just to sit on her front porch and watch her chickens and be entertained by pippin(her cute dog) and of course get buzzed by the occasional hummingbird.

Sounds like a nice day isa25.

Down here in Ohio it was a rainy, lazy day...it rained almost all day long. I had stuff to do in the garage, but I did not overdo it today...

A question for you all - in the winter are your birds outside everyday? Pop door open all day long?....winters comin, you know.

Thanks -

We let our birds out everyday. I shovel paths for them to run around on in the yard.

It is funny to watch them in the snow!

It's been cloudy all day, spitting rain right now.

Sarah
