We do both... hunt, fish, keep chickens, garden with our kids, take walks, etc., but... we love to watch our teems play, too. Especially on a cold rainy day.

WE do both around here, too..But it is awful hard for me to sit inside and watch a game on a nice fall afternoon.....but rainy days and night games.....otherwise I listen to most u of m games on the radio while we work....canned all day to day w/ our daughter...got to get this stuff done so we can get to the woods and bowhunt....

And I'm with you opa - couldn't pay me to spend the day golfing and I'm sure not in to the racing thing....they both just seem to take up too much of the day.

Cat - I just emailed a guy about some delaware pullets...but if they're gone, I'm gettin those new hampshires....

I am sooo with you on that. I am very lucky my husband doesn't watch a lot of sports on TV. Red Wings late in the season and sometimes NASCAR. Which I call nap time.
We were gonna do a hay ride and fire outside but the darn weather wouldn't give us a break today. The kids did all play hide and seek and touch football earlier outside then it started raining and most of these boys had no coats with them. So in the house we all are. Everyone is settled down for the most part now. Finally at 11pm.

Good morning everyone! Another kruddy day today -- windy, rainy, and cold. DH was going to go bow hunting this weekend, but stayed home cuz of the weather. We're going to get pumpkins instead today! Also making bbq sandwiches and veggiie soup YUM!

Hello!

I wish the weather would decide what it wants to do. I need to do some more canning of applesauce and grape juice. But it is too cruddy to venture out for me! Hopefully this afternoon

Have a great day everyone!

We all servived the sleep over. All the boys had fun. I did take a nap though earlier this afternoon.
Last night we put the Buff Orp rooster outside into the coop after everyone was asleep, by that I mean the chickens, that went well. I set the alarm for 7am went out to watch them all wake up and see how it would go. All of the older chickens could of cared less, even the turkeys didn't care about him. Then the new rooster freaked out and tried fighting a couple hens. I backed him off with my foot and he went for them again and my silkie roo stepped in and backed him againt the wall to keep him from the hens. Then it turned into WWE rooster match. No blood and the new roo backed down. Next the rooster tried to challenge some of the hens who did not back down from him either. Then Maggie my favorite and head chicken even over the silkie rooster kicked his butt. Still no blood just pecking order stuff. Now I have a big rooster hiding in the nest boxes. He has been brought down to lowest rank. They do let him eat and drink but they are keeping him in line. We'll see how it goes the rest of the week. Any good advice is always welcome.

Howdy all -

I have a chance at some Delawares (the NH reds are gone) about an hour away from me...only want 2 or 3 (maybe 4) more...and I really would like more dels......BUT my neighbor lady has some nice buff orps and white rocks to sell....right around he corner...

not sure what to do...really like those delawares, but 2 hr round trip for 2-3 birds?? What to do, what to do.....

And when I get them home, how do I introduce them?? Sneak em in at night? Dog crate in the coop for a while?...quarantine? Let me know how it goes for your roo, Briana......

HELP PLEASE!!

Must have been early this morning, my nasty rooster got out of the hen house some how and attacked my Cochin Roo. He's torn him to pieces. I found him hiding under and apple tree. He is still bleeding from his comb. His eyes are are swollen shut and his chest and feet are scratched up pretty bad.

I tried to clean him up with saline solutiion but to just even try to touch his comb with anything, he goes crazy. He wont eat, not even his favorite tomatoes. Havent seen him drink either.

I also bought some corona sav to tend to the wounds but he will not allow me to touch them. And have him on tetracycline water. i have him right here next to me in a airline crate bottom and he's staying put. Should I put a heating pad under him on low or a heat lamp to keep him warmer? (its 67 in my house now)

Should I just take him to the vet tomorrow and have them put him under to clean him up? Or should I just leave him be to heal/scab over?

I am beside myself as I dont know how that rooster got outside. Needless to say, HE IS GONE. As there are too many good roosters out there, then to have one that is so vicious to humans and other animals.

Thanks in advance for all your advice.

He is sleeping in a nest box tonight. But I did quarantine him. I only had him by himself in quaratine. I think that is why he went a little nutty at seeing all the other chickens. If I ever get almost grown chickens again I will get a least 2 so they have company. But now that he has been knocked down a couple notches he is kinda sweet. If you don't have Orpingtons you should get some chickinlickin. They are great birds.

I do like to put mine in at night. I also make sure they have a get away place... usually mine do fine.... there is usually a little squabble to make sure the new ones know they are low bird on the ladder. Getting more than one will help, too. Just watch them for a bit. If they are drawing blood, then put them in a crate. You should quarintine them, especially if you do know know the flock they are coming from.

Ooopsy your poor roo. I haven't had to deal with anything that bad yet. One chicken that broke part of her beek off and one that cut part of her comb off. Both of those times I had my husband hold them and I cleaned them up the best I could with warm soapy water and rinsed. The comb wound I put antibacterial ointment on as well. A day of rest in the pet carrier and they both did well and were back outside in 24 hours or less. Good luck and I hope he is doing better in the morning.
