this spring, one of our goals is to make a herb garden around the chicken runs.

Hi guys. Just wanted to tell someone that I knew would understand...my DH just called me and told me one of my hens that had been sick died today. I checked on her before I left for work, and she seemed better. She'd started sneezing about a week ago; I watched her carefully for a few days...heard rattling, so I pulled her and decided to treat with Gallimycin. She seemed to be getting better, today was day 6 of treatment. Sigh. I just assumed she'd make it. I'm sad. RIP, Jersey #2.

that's what we figured, so they can have what comes through the fence and we can have what's on the outside of the fence.

pots are wonderful for herbs. herbs are weeds and very invasive. invasive but yummy!

Sorry to hear that Wynette. I've lost 4 birds so far this winter. One got locked out of the coop. 2 started having difficulty breathing and were making a funny cough. The first I drowned trying to medicate it. The second I was treating, including penicillin injections. She seemed to be getting better, eating and drinking on her own. Then she relapsed and was gone guick. The 4th was a crossbeak and I think that may have contributed to her demise. One day she's fine the next dead. I just hate the not knowing part of raising these things. Maybe one of these days I'll get it figured out. When I do I probably get hit by a truck the next day.

Before the truck gets to you, let us all know, because I'm in the same boat; just when I think I have a handle on something, something ELSE crops up. I tell you, I'm so sick of losing birds and sick birds! Was really hoping 2009 would be a better year for me, chicken wise.

Thanks, citalk...SIGH.

You know what seems odd, too? I swear, whenever I name one, they get sick & die on me.

Okay, that's a drastic overexaggeration. And I guess I haven't lost "that" many. But, when you have a small flock, you get to know each and every one, and they are ALL missed.

I'm so sorry to hear about your loss Wynette...and Opa's too.

Hang in there, though, things WILL get better. Everytime I hatch some cute little fuzzy butts, fall in love with them, and then turn out to be roos....I tell myself the same thing...

IT'S GOTTA GET BETTER!

Let me see if I can remember this quote right it is from
Dr susse
Don't cry because it is over
Smile because it has happened

Because I do wildlife rehabilitation I have to deal with death a no matter how often you see it the pain is just as raw. That quote always gives me a needed smile in a time of loss

Another good method for cooking down tomato juice is an electric roaster. That's what we used this past summer and it did work out real nice. I just set it up in the garage, that way all of the steam and heat wasn't in the house. Does anyone use a Vittorio food mill? I love mine. Peels and seeds drop out the end and the juice and pulp go into a pan. Brought mine 30 years ago and it was a great investment. Work well for pumpkin too.
