That show could be so true to life!

I think I forgot to mention that in order for the finger snap to work and the apporpriate response to occur you might have use the following the snap with a finger thump to the back of the head technique to accelerate the learning curve of the "fingersnap".

I am new to the board (since yesterday) and just wanted to pop in and say hello. I may try wading through the thread later on to see who is on here from my part of the state, but in my mini-search I see that Babsboys and Miss Jayne are pretty much in my back yard!!! I have just in the last couple of weeks started getting interested in turkeys and chickens. My oldest DD is thinking about showing poultry for the first time at the Tuscola County fair this summer. We already do horses and dogs, so time to branch out into another livestock area

Thanks for the welcome guys!!

Vicki--I checked out your page------I love the Wyandottes!!!! They are so beautiful. I started a thread in breeds to see what folks recommended for new poultry showers in 4-H. I am not sure if I have to buy my own or if my friend will pick out birds for us when she gets them for her own kids, but I want a clue what to get if I have to get it myself. My kids also do arts and crafts and the baking. My 2 youngest are cloverbuds so they do those categories. My oldest is 10 and is seeing what different exhibits she can try this year. She has alot of fun, and after her nice premium check from last year she has the hunger for more!!

I usually let the kids try something new every year. It is exciting and they learn about new breeds. Keeps them interested and learning. I hope the premium checks continue,

the way the economy is, they almost got cut a couple of years ago and rumor has it, they be might be cut again after this year, when Jennifer starts chopping things out of the budget!

We almost lost our whole program here last year, but folks rallied in our county and through a fit about cutting the extension office. It worked for now, but things are just going from bad to worse everywhere.

I was told by some friends that getting the kids into 4H is very time consuming and expensive. I just got a list of local groups and am going to call one that is close to here that does rabbits.
Is 4H really expensive?
My DD would like to get involved, but we don't have a ton of extra money. Nobody around here does poultry, to bad because my boys really love the chickens.

Of course the horses are not cheap to show, but other than the annual sign up fee for 4-H I don't remember spending much to show our dogs. And there hasn't been a sign up fee for the other exhibits either. My kids do posters and scrapbooks and my oldest saves her art projects from school to enter. They also do some of the baking stuff. I think it is more about what you want to put into it. I don't think it is necessarily expensive to be in 4-H.

It can be expensive. I showed beef cattle, you have a lot invested into animal, feed, equiptment, etc.

I was a lucky one, my 1976 State fair Grand Champion steer paid for a good chunk of my college.

It is a gamble, but no losers.

I think it depends on what you are showing. Horses are expensive no matter what!

However, we pay $10 per kid participation fee, our club chooses to pay that. Then we pay $10 per kid in dues to our club, that is just what our club has set in dues per year. There are a few other fees, but not many. We are charged to camp at the fair, if you choose to camp. If you kids shows, they will need show clothes, but often you can get these used, borrow, etc. if need be. Arts and crafts depend on which art/craft, of course, can be minimal or expensive, depends on if you are doing a drawing or building an engine?!

I think it can be done very economically. Most breeders give discounts to 4-H kids. Many stores also give discounts to 4-H kids. What projects is your daughter thinking about doing?
