BTW, just a thought... my canaries have to have total darkness in order to stay healthy. Too much or too little light out of season really does mess up thier body chemistry. I cover the cage all but one corner- kind of a 5 minute warning... they know to find thier roost... they usually are ahead of me, as they can tell it is getting less light outside. Then I cover them all the way.... just thinking that your hens will do just as well in the dark...

Thank you but since I love my chicklets sooo much and plan on having them forever and ever, I should just buy the book. I'm sure it will get LOTS of use

I think she was just in a hurry to help you! I have a friend that also feed cracked corn as main food and I have tried and tried to tell her that is why she doesn't get the eggs she should, but that is all they ever fed chickens when she was growing up, so she thinks that is all they should have. Well, to each his own. However, I get twice the amount of eggs she does.

Also, if you do some reading, it is important for chickens to have enough light and also enough dark to regulate their internal clocks. So while you are trying to be nice to your chickens, they will be fine in the dark and actually need it to be dark to sleep well. Just like most people wouldn't sleep well with the lights on and eventually it would affect their health because they weren't getting enough good rest.

Great thing about BYC, it is a wealth of info and we are always learning!!

The kids came in from doing chores this morning and Emily's call duck layed her first egg!!!!

So now she will be earning her keep around here She is cheap to keep, still not through the first bag of 50# duck food we bought in October.

Steve- let Judy know that the call duck egg is about the same size as the chicken's egg. Emily's duck has quite the personality and is fun to watch and play with.

About lights- With the power outage early in the week the timer in my coop got am /pm switched and at 1am last night
my happy male guniea decided to get me up and turn out the lights.had shovel in hand and flashlight but only lights.
