Good Morning, all! We had our fourth hatch yesterday. Started with 9 (6 shipped in) and got 4 nice baby bantam cochins. Only one of the shipped eggs hatched, but it is one from the Mille Fleur Cochin project, so we are excited to see how it feathers out.

I'm just not having much luck with shipped eggs. I think our Post Office must see the FRAGILE stickers and drop kick the packages. Ought to ship them marked BIOHAZARD or HUMAN REMAINS or ?????. Anyone have any suggestions? Almost all my homegrown eggs hatch, but the shipped eggs' hatch rate is something like 12%. So I have 2 $25 Ameraucana chicks, and $50 cochin chick, etc.

I don't know the answer but I am bumping over to the next page

scratch may be a little big for them right now. it will depend on how big the pieces are. and if they are on sand the are most likely picking up little pebbles and rocks to grind food, so if they are little pieces, it should be okay.
no matter what, scratch and other treats should not be more than 10% of the food intake for the day. it is not a complete food for poultry.

i bet they were happy! ours are having a blast. the goslings and ducklings have been exploring the yard....this is from a couple of days ago.

thanks Miss Jayne,
I just gave them a handful, tossed it out on the sand. Hubby dug out all the grass and topsoil and put in bucket loads of sand so that the pen would drain easier and not turn into a swamp. The chicks sure were happy! I let them out first and then a few hours later let out the phoenix rooster and hen. This was the first time they were all together and they did fine. I decided then that it was ok to take out the chicken wire divider that I had in the coop. Might send a pic later but I am a little embarrased of my "hillbilly" coop

By the way nice pic.

Thank you HBH. And DON'T every be embarassed by your coop! I started out with old rough looking hand-me-down doghouses. We all start somewhere and progress as we can

Our chicken buddies will love us no matter what it looks like

Myrna-

You are not that far away. A fun day trip to help you fix things up some would be an adventure! I am not too awefully handy though, so we would have to get Steve or Opa to come with the expertise:D

Sarah

I don't live too far from there either, so if ya need a hand, let me know. I'm also out on unenjoyment so I'm always looking for something to do!

LMC,
sorry to hear about the little phoenix!

Why hello MJ! The other Phoenix is doing beautifully. I can't wait to see what she is going to look like when she's full grown. I'm about 70% sure she's a she..... but I've definitely been known to be wrong

oh this is a good report! yay! and howdy to you too. if you can get a pic, we should be able to tell by now.

Oh Yay really?!?!?! I'll try to get one tonight. We're off for our first run at camping this weekend in the new-used camper so things are a little hectic getting ready. But chickens are always a priority!
