I'm so excited about the new baby. It's almost exactly the size of the one I had so I'm definately thinking it's a cross. They got along right off the bat once I took the sick one out. Thank you so much. I was really glad I got to meet you and check out your place (which is awesome by the way). I'll keep you updated on the babies and take some pics along the way.

YIKES STRIPES - I was just reading an article from "Chicken Keeping Secrets" about broodies - It said NOT to use hay for bedding for broodies because it can be harmful to new chicks! My broodies should have chicks hatching this week end - HELP - should I change the bedding from hay to shavings??? AGAIN - appreciate input from you "seasoned" educators! Nancy:D

no, they do not add calcium. (Howard doesn't) it is because it is not enough protein.

they will fail without enough protein.

Maybe it was not Calcium then.......but it was something that he includes in his. He made very sure I got the point. Gosh, sure wish I could remember what it was. I'll have to ask when I go tomorrow.

Up to a certain age they need the higher protein. I can't remember the age and I was to lazy to search

!!
Right now their run isn't complete and the chickens go bonkers eating the turkeys layer crumbles. So the turkeys are in the coop going bonkers eating the chickens layer crumbles

THANKS Crystal! Hopefully we'll have a hatcing this week end! Excitement at the Huston household!

this is because hay and straw are very different....hay is a food and straw a bedding. hay can wad up and impact the crop. straw is a great bedding material and wonderful for nest boxes also. Crystal is using the correct product. (and it makes them smell pretty too!

Briana....regarding the turkey feed everyone is talking about....the higher the protein the better... if you have a mixed flock, you can mix half layer, half grower and that works well too. (i do half of 24% and half 17%) and my turkeys do very well. no matter what, you started them out on a nice high protein, their structures are strong and they have a good start. supplement with extra proteins if necessary like some scrambled eggs or whatnot if you need to up the protein once in awhile.

you'll do great! did you see me waving to you in New Boston tonight????

* FYI...Howard does not ad any nutrients to the feed, only the actual food components, i believe. if you want extra calcium etc, you need to use oyster shell etc. *

Staples....thank you for welcoming us to your home! your set up is way too cute! your family is wonderful. can i just say that your little sisters just crack me up! tell Megan her cookies rock. i want that recipe or else. hey...get yer headlights fixed!!!!!

Hi I'm in Lapeer, so not terribly far from you. I worked in Holly for a little over a month last year, so I kind of know the area.

FYI, I was strongly warned by Howard not to let Turkeys eat layer feed. If I remember correctly it was because it has a higher calcium level that will wipe out the Turkeys kidneys/liver (can't remember which). I would assume that commercial feed would be similar to his, but not sure????

Since the poults weren't actually fed layer feed (they just occassionally creeped into the coop to sneak some bites

), they are fine. And since they were free ranging, they were getting plenty of protein on top of that. 24% Grower was their primary feed and they did super well on it. Too bad I couldn't get over how annoying they are....I would've kept them.
