Awwww...thanks Briana.

Cochins are generally very sweet chickens to begin with. And when they're teamed up with incredibly loving families, the combination just cannot be beat.

Yesterday I hatched out 19 more Cochin chicks, and a lot of them I'll be keeping for a few weeks to see which are frizzled...so I may have some pullets available. My total hatch ended up being 49 chicks...all from my bantam breeds except for my first 5 Russian Orloffs

. Talk about chicks out the whazoo!!!!

But I'm loving every inch of their cute little fuzzy butts.

I know what you mean about chicks up the whazoo. We had mama hen hatch 4, we got 6 from you, hatched 22 lost 1, and ordered 12 lost 3 but they added 13 black austrolops(sp) for added warmth. So if I added right 53? On top of that we have 8 BBB turkey poults in the big brooder. Sometimes I wonder what was I thinking?

I still want to do a small hatch of my turkeys eggs too.

We do raise our chickens to eat also so all those rooster will get butchered along with the meat turkeys. I am thinking they will all live out their days in a hoop house for the summer. That way no drama with my big roo, Rodney.

Just got back from the hospital- my sixteen year old son broke his leg falling off his skateboard. They splinted it, and I have to call the orthopedic surgeon/doctor on Monday morning.
He called me and asked me to pick him up because he had hurt himself- well, I was just about ready to go to bed...seems to be the theme here- I am going to have to either stop telling my family I am tired, or I am going to have to stop sleeping all together..when i got my son, I took one look and said, "We have to go get an xray" He protested, but not too much.
Yep, broken.

Everyone here is asleep now, but I wanted to tell you all i hope you had a wonderful day. I did wayyyy too much yard work and I am beat. I am very jealous that sevenchickens ducklings are hatching and mine are doing NOTHING.

Where are all of you? GOOD Morning!

Late start here, but coffee is ready- come on over and get some.
No sleeping in around here, ask the dogs...
My brother in law just picked up my husband to help him load baby pigs. He is picking up a bunch of them in Hillsdale. My husband cant do much helping- but they are going to use him to make sure none of them escape the truck.

Is it supposed to rain today?

Still not a peep coming from my duck eggs.. sevenchickens did any more hatch for you?

Rain has started here but it's still going to be a good morning. I just came in from letting the birds out and found a big ole coon in my trap so after I get a couple of cups of coffee in me I'll go handle that situation.

Nope, no more ducklings. When I woke up this morning I jumped out of bed because I heard peeping, when I got to the family room I realized why, I have a duckling (with 2 chicks) in the brooder! She/he is so darn cute. I could just hold her all the time. She just sits in my hand and looks at me like "are you my Mama"? I have got to get a picture posted.

Suppose to rain in the am and clear out this afternoon. Good Morning! Sorry about your son. My sons did BMX racing and we were frequent visitors to the ER. They're not racing any more, but still ride and do the tricks. Still having broken bones and frequent visits to the ER. At least they're grown and I don't have to accompany them anymore.
Had a great day yesterday. Daughter came over and her two kids. Went out to lunch and then took the dogs and went on a long walk. Then we went out for ice cream. Nice to spend quality time with the family.

We had a family in our chimney the night before last. DH handled the situation too! I don't like taking a life or 5 but the disease carrying murdering buggers just can't live at my house.

Good Morning all! I'm missing those nice warm, sunny mornings we were having. I'm ready for summer.

On the agenda today is some dirt moving. I've got some very rich dirt in the nighttime run we used to use for the meat chickens and have been using the hogs to turn up some great topsoil for me to move into the garden. So that's the plan. Move some more dirt into the garden beds and turn that soil so I can continue planting.

I've got a question for the color/genetics gurus out there. My daughter had some allowance burning a hole in her pocket and decided to bring a silkie pullet home yesterday from a swap. The bird is blue (grey) all over with "splash" patterning but her splash is all a red/brown. Is this just called "splash"? Or is there a different name for it when the splash is a whole different base color than the body color?

Briana -- I don't know if it's of any help but I do find the single biggest factor in the kick of just about any gun is how I hold it. What ammo you're shooting and the gun caliber makes a difference, for sure, but it's incremental in my experience if you are holding the gun well and a big part of that is being ABLE to hold the gun well. I can't get a gun that doesn't fit me (especially one that is too long) seated properly AND hold it firmly in that seat so it ends up kicking "harder" and makes my shoulder sore. I think if you find guns that fit you, you will probably be able to shoot just about any caliber without soring up your shoulder. I know it makes a big difference for me. I can shoot a 12ga without a sore shoulder, but refuse to shoot my husband's 12ga because it'll bruise me up. The gun is just too long. I don't have the control I need to absorb the recoil. I don't know where Carleton is, but if you've got a sporting goods store anywhere nearby they tend to carry a couple more youth options on a regular basis so you can get a feel for them. If not try going to an arms dealer and ask for help, you may even be able to find an older/used standard sized gun with a shorter stock.

Does anyone here breed Narragansett? I'm in the market for some poults. I found one breeder in my ALBC Directory in Michigan. She's in Lapeer. I have to wonder if that's a sign that I am meant to order those goslings and pick them up in lapeer, too.

Left her a message last night so hopefully I'll hear back, but if any fellow BYCers have poults...
