Next batch is coming the end of the month for us and the kids 4-H fair projects. These will be 8 weeks old for our fair.

I would go with the standard size hens. Bantams eggs are smaller so you have to always add more to recipes and sometimes the conversion isn't exact. (But I love bantam eggs hard boiled) We have a huge assortment of hens. Each chicken is different on the personality. Buff Orpingtions, Black Austrolorps are good layer and docile birds. We bought some hens last year from a fellow BYC member and he had gotten them from TSC and they were called Comets. Now these birds are the most curious ones I have ever owned. They walk right into our garage if the door is open

Now hubby isn't happy about that, so I try to keep the doors shut. They lay huge XL eggs, which I am surprised for the small size of the bird.

I never talked to the neighbors but they live aways for us. We have a 1/2 mile driveway

Just don't get a roo and you won't be violating the nuisance noise.

Our black lab had to be trained not to chase the chickens. He still has to be watched around the ducks. He is great to have around also because we have hawks. Chickens were here first, and he was a puppy to train.


Chickens don't like water, so you shouldn't have an issue with that.... now ducks on the other hand love it and you would have a really gross pool

OMG, Seven!!! Did the child's parents show any kind of remorse? In so many of these kinds of things, it's hard to blame the child when it's obvious that the parents are screw ups. But a child who can take a life without showing a great deal of emotion is scary. My son has been present (he's 7 years old) a couple of times when my husband has had to shoot a predator. Even though it's a predator, it's a life-a living being. We've always taught him that if a person has to kill an animal, it should be done as respectfully and humanely as possible. We also tell him that our animals that are raised for meat have just as much of a right to be treated well as any other animal does. It freaks me out that people could teach their children any differently. I'm so sorry for your little girl.

My son had a sad morning. Me, too, but I'm a bit better equipped to deal with these things. He went out to let the chickens out before catching the bus to school. He decided to see if there were any eggs yet, and found out little Frickin' dead on the floor of the coop. Amon (my son) has seen several deaths on the farm in past year, including animals that have been sent to the processor. He has taken it all very well, and understands the way it works. This was tough, though.

For those of you who don't know the story behind Frickin', I'll briefly explain. Frickin' was a little silkie roo that we rescued off the side of a dirt road last Summer. Someone had just tossed him. I didn't need another roo, but I wasn't just going to leave him there. We quickly fell in love with him and his eccentric behavior, and he inspired us to expand our rainbow flock. He always kept us in giggles, because he was just such a little odd ball. He never had much use for the other chickens, but he loved the other livestock. He would follow Bayak Obama around, and wait for him to lay down. Then he would hop on top of Bayak's back and go to sleep. They would hang out like that for hours. Frickin' also loved to sleep on top of the sheep. They never seemed to mind at all. Frickin' was the only chicken who did that. We'll miss him. Here are some pics:

I saw my first hummingbird of the season on Friday! They are back and we are prepared... we have 150 lbs of sugar! It might be enough

Hello all,

Yes I am still alive and kickin just been so busy school is over 6 May that is for spring and it kicks off again in the fall.

My oldest daughter just got married last saturday and my twins just got there drivers license so they are driving. Had to change motors in my daughters s 10 that I bought her but that was ok made her help.

Still hopin to make it to chicken stock if everything goes well I will be there I have some pullets that I am going to bring for some that are on this site.
