Alpha- Chickflick and I went to the one in Imlay last year. Was surprized at the amount of people and birds. We were just looking and did not notice the amount of chicks. This year I'm looking for Delawares and/or Light Sussex.
I was a little surprized at the variety at Hamilton's. TSC, Mason Feed, Big Arce all have a very limited selection.

Oh yes, the Imlay City swap was pretty good last year. There were many chicks to be found there. Also, pullets, hens, you name it. I will be going again this year and it is next weekend. It is worth the drive for me. Maybe I'll see some other BYC'ers there???

There is also a swap meet in Corunna this Saturday at the Shiawassee fairgrounds. It is from 8-1 I believe, put on by the 4-H club there. Then the 26th is the one in Imlay City and Charlotte. I know one of our BYC members talked about coming to Charlotte and bringing chicks, so hopefully she will.

I can't remember if I had mentioned this before. If you are looking for chicks, besides Hamiltons, there is a new TSC in Ortonville and they just now got their ducks/chicks in. Call for a list. They are located on M-15(Ortonville Rd.) just south of town, where the James Lumber used to be. I was there yesterday and they had a few white chicks in. Looks like they sold out of the others.

I have been avoiding the Tractor Supply store in Alpena like the plague because I know they got babies in. They sent me a postcard offering me a free chick waterer if I purchased 6 chicks.... it was almost my undoing..lol.

Good thing I'm going to Alpena on Monday then. I finally made my decision today just to get the 10 free meat chicks with a bag of feed from Miller Feeds and will wait till next year to see about getting other chickens. Hal and I have pretty much determined he is allergic to egg whites (even baked in a cake!) but he can eat cakes made with yolks only (so far).

So for now it's just some meat chickens for me.
Besides my runner duck is sitting on 21 eggs of unknown fertility. I could be up to my ears in waterfowl in another 2 weeks! :|

I refuse to go to Alpena....lol.

I have had incubators going since January, I now have broody hens on eggs plus 2 bators and a hatcher going. I have chicks in 2 brooders and 2 groups I just moved out.

What I need is to be put into a self induced coma until the urge to hatch anything passes....lol.

I've got some runner duck eggs in the bator. I didn't plan on doing any ducks, but got sent a goose egg as a surprise in a swap. So of course I worried it would have to brood alone and slipped 3 of my duck eggs in with it. Wouldn't you know all 3 of mine were fertile and the goose egg clear....lol.

That really sucks about the egg allergy and to the whites only. I know you were hoping it was just the duck eggs.

I look at the Meat chick add every time I go to get feed at Millers but I tell myself I have enough butchering to do. The downside to hatching is too many cockerels. I've got some young maran cockerels I hatched in January that are going to be too pretty, I can tell already....always a tough choice on who stays and who goes to freezer camp. I have enough roos...just like everybody else...lol.

The marans are big and not afraid, they don't take much crap in the chicken yard...lol. Surprised me their first day "out" with the flock and a silkie rooster went to check out the newbies feed dish and a young maran cockerel jumped on him and proceeded to drag him out of the enclosure....lol I think the silkie was as stunned as I was.

He is willing to try another of his mom's chickens eggs, he's hoping the reaction he had to the deviled one he had at Easter was just him being paranoid. I dn't have high hopes. I am amazed he can eat the baked good made with just yolks whereas he can't if there's whites mixed in.

I guess the dogs are just going to have to get used to poached egg whites added to their dog food whenever I need to use a yolk. I can just imagine how they're gonna hate that!

I'm taking the meat chickens to an Amish farm in Spruce. I'll worry about butchering my own next year if I decide to get some of those free range meat type chickens.

I just hope I can cajole my in-laws into renting me some freezer space.
