Aww Kim I'm so sorry about Carmen! I hate it when that happens! If it's any consolation, Opie, Sadie and Jax are thriving and the best behaved ducks out there. Everyone else can be loud and make messes but not those 3. Maybe it's because they were among my originals so my heart is with them (and Sunny) the most!

On another note, we have a bunny, Gizmo that's been behaving very strangely. First he stopped eating. I thought maybe it was because his food might have been stale, even though the other bunny Elvis has been fine. So I brought him into the house a few days ago, changed his food and he still didn't eat right away. But now he's eating like he always has. However, when he's let out to run on the porch, he'll run for a few mins just fine, then flop completely over. Sometimes he'll do it in his enclosure without running too. He seems happy. He still asks for his cuddles when we open the door, he still eats like crazy and he poops and pees just fine. So who knows. So I called a friend of mine who is a vet instructor at MSU and he said sounds like a neurological issue which is what I was thinking. I don't know how he could have gotten that though. But a lot of people have held him so who knows. So I've already had the talk with my daughter that if he gets worse we aren't going to let him suffer. He's a very good boy and so far he seems fine except for the occasional flopping over. I'll keep an eye on him.

Hit your local Home Depot for "damaged" sheets
(top and bottom of skids).

I have negotiated them down to ¼ price sometimes.

As for DA STORM we (just west of Alma)have gotten 2" of heavy, sloppy snow

We insulate ours, but scrounge materials from all over. Sometimes you can get insulation from the ReStore in Flint (Habitat for Humanity), chunks of styrofoam, etc. Be advised that chickens LOVE foam insulation (and will eat the fiberglass stuff, too), so you need to cover it in some way. You need LOTS of ventilation at the top.

Sloppy is a good word for this morning. Sooner or later I need to go out and check the birds. Make sure all the waterers are filled. Feeders topped off. You know all the stuff we always do but that is so much more difficult as the temperatures plummet. The forecast for the coming week doesn't sound like anything I'd like to hear. Single digit temperatures aren't to kind on my old body.

I just got the WORST stink eye from my birds outside today when I opened the coop door to let them out; they were looking at me as though I brought this yucky white, fluffy stuff with me out there!

So the first big snow of the season wasn't too bad for the animals. Well, maybe not the chickens. The only ones that bothered to step outside were the isa browns who seem to want to be outside no matter what the weather is. The ducks seemed to enjoy it all day!

When they first stepped outside. A bit confused at first.
