Getting ready to go out again, twice a day, I bundle up like a snowman and waddle out there.

My neighbors probably get a kick out watching me!

Fortunately everyone is tucked in snug, and I just have to top off their food and waters (love heated waterers!) and waddle back in.

I just came in. If money wasn't so tight with surgery coming up I would have invested in a couple of heated waterers for sure. Today we've had to refill their water 4 times! The ducks make me mad when they get in it, splash it around and make a mess. I've changed their water contraptions several times in hopes I'd find something they wouldn't get in or dump. So far nothing works. Then they wonder why they can't stand up around the water dish...it's a darn ice rink!!!

The chickens food trough is inside since they refuse to come out and it's nice and cozy in there so the food doesn't freeze. The ducks food never lasts because Sunny is always there to eat it all before anyone gets any lol

Well, we got the snow I wanted. Unfortunately, my order came with a free side of single digit temps and subzero windchill that I did not order.

I hope everyone is keeping as warm as is possible. Looks like the temperatures are supposed to turn around soon.

December always goes by so quickly, this year seems to be going even faster. I can't believe there is only a week and a half left until Christmas. I'm sure that, too, will fly by. I need to finish sexing the geese this week as early next week some of them have a date with destiny. I started the other day but it was SO cold. My hands were freezing and I don't think they appreciated it. I'm tempted to bring them inside to do it this weekend. But the thought of the goose poop in the house is just... not enticing.

So I spend all night worrying about my birds. I go out there to turn on the heat lamp and they all look at me like I'm a criminal for waking them up to turn on a lamp! lol.

I was going to put it on a timer like the regular lamp but decided against it...for now. But since I have to go out there with the flashlight in the freezing cold to turn it on, I might have to get that extra timer. It's nights like this that I really love the pellet stove. It's warmer plus makes for great cuddling when we're watching movies!

I got the Christmas tree up! My family is getting together this weekend bc my sister will be out of town during Christmas. I really shouldn't have procrastinated on putting up the outdoor lights bc now it's freeeezing out.

I have a question: We raised a few BBW turkeys this year, started them on 22%, 18 weeks %16% and then at 22 just straight corn. We got one processed the other day, let it rest in the fridge for four whole days, smoked it and it was as tough as LEATHER!! WHY??? I figured I wouldn't have to brine it bc it was smoked but I'm not sure. What else can I do to make them not taste like rocks?! I'm having family over this weekend and they're expecting yummy home-grown turkey! I'm also posting this over in the meat section.

the HG turkey we had for TG this year was brined for a few days.... it was nice and juicy. Maybe your smoker was too hot and dried it out? Maybe you could brine and cook the traditional way.

So my broody silkie appears to have some frost on the tips of her feathers, mostly on her tail but there are a few spots on her head tuft. Should I assume this comes from sleeping in the nest box and break her of her brooding or is it nothing to be too concerned about? It is 4* out right now, although it is warmer in the coop and she doesn't even seem to notice it herself.
