Free Chickens!

My neighbor/friend/son's MIL has to get rid of all her chickens. My BIL took half of them. She still has about 6 Isa Browns that are about a year and a half old and 2 pullets at POL. The pullets are a mix of RIR, Barred Rock and Copper Marans. They are mostly white. If anyone is interested please PM me and I will get back to you.
Thanks

Hey Celia,

Now that i'm done with finals i can get on here. My girls (6) are out all the time i have the coop open. when it was really cold i had the heat lamp in the coop on but they still wouldn't go in it. Go figure. I don't think they like the snow. They have been huddling under my awning at the back of my house. So far no frost bite.

I am done shopping and wrapping!! Yes! Cutting it close this year. It was fun seeking out the things I think will make my kids and grandkids happy. Can't wait to see all the smiles on Friday.
I don't make cookies too often any more. My kids want the traditional Fried Cakes. It's a German pastry. The German name translates to "Torn Pants" Didn't have them for Thanksgiving and boy did I get heat for it!

It's a reminder of my mom who always had them. Time to get on the ball and get things ready to make the fried cakes.

I give some other treats but had never tried oranges.

Guess they'll be getting a special treat tonight. I have a hen who's being a bit broody already, I walk in the coop and she's sitting on the eggs and says "bbbuuurrrrrrrrrr" and I say get off of those eggs...and I get another "bbbbbuuuurrrrrr" LOL silly hen, but it's nice to know someone is taking care of the eggs in this cold weather. I think the coop is warm enough to keep them from freezing and busting open but nothing like a warm chicken butt to make sure it doesn't happen!

I'm glad I don't do xmas shopping. It's funny seeing everyone on facebook talking about still having a lot to shop for. When I did shop, I would usually have it done by Dec 1. But when I worked in retail, it was nice to always be busy with the last-minute shoppers!

350 buckeyes?? Those remind me of my mom. She had an antique dining room table with 6 inserts. She would put them all in and in a week it would be full of trays for the neighbors, day care families, teachers and people that worked for my dad (he was the administrator of the nursing home in Okemos for 20 years). Buckeyes were one of the things she made. I've had them a few times since her death 10 years ago, but none of them were the same as my mom's! It's things like that that I wish I had her write down recipes because she had secrets to all the candy and cookies she made!

Well last night we noticed that Gizmo's head was tilting to the side much more than normal. Jen, I'm beginning to wonder if your original diagnosis was right. It also seems he's not drinking as much anymore either...well, unless it's out of the dog bowl for some reason. Ugh!

I would recommend starting Gizmo on a treatment plan asap. It's not always something that can be cured though, I'm not going to lie, wryneck is usually a disease that will just keep getting worse no matter what you do. His headtilt will keep getting worse until he just rolls constantly. What kind of a diet is he on? If you're wanting to try to save him I would start him on a drug called Baytril. If he's under 10lbs you'll give him .5cc orally for 10 days. (although injection is usually easier on thier stomaches) During this time it is very important that he eats and drinks. Family Fare has fresh parsley in the produce section(either kind is fine) and it's only $1 for a batch of it. Parlsey is a great natural stimulant to make him want to eat and you can give him just a few "sticks" of it every day. I would also get a bottle of unflavored pedialyte and mix it 50/50 with his normal water. He needs to always have access to clean water! If you want to try I have a bottle of Baytril and can draw you up enough to give to him. If he's getting worse it needs to be given to him asap. I'll be in Eaton Rapids wednesday and thursday and you can come get it from me at the hospital or I can deliver it to you. Let me know some time tonight so that if you want to try it I can bring it with me tomorrow!
