Indeed. It's supposed to start Monday PM, but stay light until Tuesday PM. At which point, apparently, they're calling for blizzard-like conditions. The predictions I saw for this area said 12-18", more south, less north. We're low on precipitation around here so I'm not complaining. Not as long as the power doesn't go out, anyway.

Jen, congrats on your vent sexing!! I hope its pretty accurate! I'm trying to hold myself back from the incubator for at least two more months.. I think I can, I think I can, I THINK I can!! lol I miss watching those little fuzzy butts running around and cheeping their heads off.

Any 4H folks on here? I know there's gotta be a few of you out there. Whats the starting age to exhibit/participate? I know we've got a few years it got me wondering....

Cricket, I managed to find a good website that showed how to feather sex...these guys are only 2-3 days old and I can sooo tell a difference!

Someone tried to feather sex my isas and was so totally wrong. Out of 10 isas, 7 are positive cockrels. Finding homes for all of them will be impossible

4 days til surgery. Tomorrow I'll pack and reorganize my daughter's bedroom into mine because we have a waterbed and I don't see me getting in and out of that with no muscles in my stomach (well, already lost them with some other surgeries). Need to pay bills , clean house and I should be all set. I hope. I've taught my daughter how to use my new camera so she can take pics for me so I can still see the chickens and ducks while I'm recovering. Funny thing is, I'm not scared of surgery or recovery....just getting in the truck and riding the 30-some miles home lol

So glad to find others from Michigan! How warm to do keep your coop?

I have a heat lamp in the coop that is temperature controlled to turn on when the temp in the coop drops below about 38-35*. Is that too warm for them or too cold for them? I read in the last issue of BYP that keeping it too warm for them isn't good for them and it's almost like they are wearing little down coats!

I did research the different breeds I have and all of them have been classified as being "relatively tolerant of cold" and they don't seem to mind coming out when it's snowy. I have Rhode Island Reds, Orpingtons, and Ameraucanas.

What are your thoughts on warming the coop and what are your practices and guidelines for keeping your chicks warm?
