Anybody know if there are any dangers in cleaning out coops if your pregnant?? I know your not supposed to clean the cat litter box when preggers, didn't know if I should worry about chicken litter.

The cat litter issue is due to the potential presence of a virus in the cat's feces that causes toxoplasmosis. Cats are the main carrier/host but it is known to infect just about any warm-blooded animal. It can even be present on fruits and vegetables since they can easily come into contact with feces. Any fecal contamination can carry risk of toxoplasmosis infection, but there's really not good reason to worry needlessly. Chickens are not high risk carriers. Just wash your hands well, change your clothes and disinfect your boots when you're done. You're probably doing those things pregnant or not anyway though, so it probably won't be much change.

Remember chickens, until only recent history, were staples on most peoples' homesteads/farms and the caretaking of them fell pretty much entirely to the women, who were also charged with the job of reproducing as much as humanly possible throughout their childbearing years -- many hands makes light work! Okay, maybe not as much as humanly possible, but a lot!

Just went back to read Michiganwrangler's posting.
This is such a tragedy.....prayers for her and the family are really needed as has been said.

Absolutely! My heart just aches for her and her family today. I cannot imagine...

Thanks M2EM for posting the link so we wouldn't miss it.

Truly breaks my heart to see this, I lost my dad 18yrs ago on Easter Sunday of a massive heart attack, he was 49yrs old. How old was her dh? My heart goes out to her and her family. PRAYERS of strength, faith, love, going their way.

Thank you, everyone.

DH was 56, not terribly old.

We were supposed to go to TSC today, I was going to call back on a pony that DD tried out yesterday saying that we wanted it ... now I don't know what's going on.

Hi- I am a newbie from NW lower Michigan. Still in coop design phase, but plan to start on it as soon as the snow melts. I have never had chickens before, but I love fresh eggs and my neighbors quit raising hens, so thought I would give it a try after I got my husband/handyman on board. Looking forward to lots more chicken wisdom here.

The people on this site are awesome.. I know so many loving thoughts are being sent to MIchickenwrangler today - they will keep on being sent.. may you have peace of mind and solace that others share in your grief. Hang in there . We send our love and good thoughts.

Thank you everyone.

Still crying, still have a headache, still adjusting. Luckily daughter and assorted animals will help to keep my grounded and in a routine. I keep having this strange feeling that he's mad at me for letting him die, that I didn't wake up in the night to check on him (he fell asleep in his rocking chair and didn't wake up). I want to tell him that I'm sorry but I can't, I'm never going to be able to talk to him again or see him alive again or anything.

Also, not that I want to deal with this, but if anyone knows a good probate lawyer in the Saginaw/Bay City/Midland or NE Michigan area (I'm in Arenac county, kinda the borderland between Tri-Cities and northern MI), let me know.

Thanks

Jessica
