I love be a country girl, I have lived here now for about 21 years and live in the middle of a corn field, this year it is corn. I also didn't get into the animals until we were here for a while. Now, I throw the bags of feed over my shoulder and haul it to the back. My boss says I am get country girl arms, I guess you can now see a tiny muscle starting.

I seen pictures of your hens, they look pretty happy! Very nice picture.

thank you, I should be able to take that small piece of fence out of there soon that they are perched on, its was to keep them away from the chain link where there was a gap they could escape from between the pist and the barn.

I had found some small chicken fencing at a garage sale and bought it, thinking I might be able to use it for something.... well now with the baby chicks it comes in handy. I did the same thing, but I zipped tied it to the wider fencing and I haven't had and escapes yet.

They look like they like the board in there to perch on.

There is a farm here in Lapeer that sells it at a decent price. If you think you might be in the area send me a pm and I can get their # or Web addy for you.

Kathy

I just got back from Lapeer. I'm taking a class at the EMU campus on Fish Lake.
Where is this farm? I'd like to get some DE as well.
If any Ann Arbor, Ypsi, or downriver folk would like some, I can pick up extra.
My last week of class is Wednesday to Saturday.

yeah, they like it, they get up on it in the evenings just before I put them away. But since they can get ON TOP, they can also jump down behind it, so theres no sense leaving it there. my logic kills me sometimes...

I read Wild Birds Unlimited carries it, theres a store in Midland and one in Frankenmuth, I'm going to go down to Frankenmuth which is only 15 miles south of me.
does anyone know if this stuff draws moisture? would I have to store it with something that has a tight lid?

I'm dead tired and can hardly stand up. Got the coop cleaned out, hauled all the old pine shavings off into the woods in the back where the dogs and the chickens never go. Set off a fog bomb, dusted the entire coop with Sevin and put in fresh pine shavings. I started at 1:00 and finished at 8:45. The chickens were not happy that they could not get in to roost at their normal time which is about 8:00 p.m, but they did get to free range all day. I pray that this will get rid of the mites. Fife, you haven't grown any extra eyes or anything have you? I remember you said you got Sevin all over yourself when you did your chickens. I wore gloves but didn't put on long pants or sleeves, it was too hot. I was glowing pretty good so the Sevin was sticking to me as well. I did wear a face mask though. One thing I'm sure of is that I don't have mites! I came right in and showered but I swear I can still smell Sevin. I also rearranged a few things which made more room in the coop. Thank God that's done.

those of you who got some currant bushes from me, this is what mine look like after about 6 years...
first photo is Rovada, a red one which is now taller than the back of the lawn chair, I decided I needed to pick it's berries tonight or the birds would get all of them:

Ben Serrack is a black berry and much smaller bush I think cause it sets in more sunlight, it only comes up to the arm of the chair:

and Blanca, a white berry, has longer stems but smaller berries, very mild tasting, they turn chartruce, not white when ripe:

I give them composted cow manure, layers of newspaper covered with wood chips about every other year. Prune out third year branches.

Cool! I love salamanders. Reminds me of my childhood looking under logs in the woods for them. When I lived in my previous home which was very old, I had HUGE salamanders in the basement! It was a very damp old place, very creepy. One time when I was cleaning down there I lifted a damp cardboard box and found two very large black salamanders with electric blue spots on them. I mean, they were 8" long and very fat! I took them out and put them under a big cracked cement slab in an old chicken coop. The floor had heaved and had lots of space under it so I hope they did OK. Lots of bugs for them to eat. I would have left them in the basement but I was getting the house ready to sell and didn't think the new owners would appreciate the company. What will you do with the eggs RaZ? Make a very tiny omlet?
