I will have to take some pictures of the two hens I was talking about. My husband said the one didnt come from family farm and home but from a place in Chicago, a friend gave us a bunch of chicks one day and I had no idea what they were. the other one for sure came from FFH

Here is a pic of one of our roosters, can you identify what he is for me? we have been back and forth and just arent sure. we thought he was a phoenix but arent sure.

I am not very good at determining breed, but I wanted to say that is one HANDSOME roo. Those tail feathers do look like phoenix, and his coloring is gorgeous. I can just imagine him dragging around icicles on his tail over the winter.

Definitely a phoenix I'd say! I've wanted one because they are sooo cool! I have a serama roo that looks just like that except for the long tail. Pretty Boy rules everything. He's not mean at all but everyone "listens" to him, even our big BLRWs!! lol

the orange around his neck has started filling in even more and getting longer and his tail is much longer, these pictures are at least a month to two months old. Hes a good roo, he eats out my hand and sometimes lets me pet him but hes not super lovey or anything. He does rule the roost though. I also have a blue laced red wyandotte roo who has his own hen he tends to and a white roo that was supposed to be a red hen (he came with the new hampshire reds, I guess as a packing peanut. lol I originally thought he was a white leghorn but now I am pretty sure he looks exactly like a rhode island white. could that be possible? I have tried several times to get a picture of him but he ALWAYS moves as soon as I click the camera ugh! I need to get more pics of them all. Apparently my becoming a chicken fancier has turned into a guessing game of sorts.

The pretty roo (pheonix or not) came from a livestock swap at the FFH stores when we were in Muskegon one day. I think I got him for like 5$ total score for me, hes so gorgeous. I am pretty sure that one of the eggs we just hatched is a cross of his, with a RIR. excited to see what it turns out to be!!

I have found that if you rehydrate the day before by adding 1 can of coconut milk to one package of coconut you will have a much moister cake.

Just a suggestion for your roost, rather than a branch use a 2x4 on the flat. The birds can stand on it and in the winter they have a much easier time of lowering over their feet. With a perch they must grasp they are constantly jostling for position and can't expand their feathers nor lower their body as readily.

I agree about the roost, my girls tend to fill up the larger rods, but I have a problem with a few pullets jamming themselves into nesting boxes (seriously, like 4 in one nest box) and filling them with poo..blegh...any ideas on how to stop this? I have enough roosting rods for all of the kiddos in there but they keep doing this. Im so tired of cleaning the poop out of the nest boxes so the big girls can lay in a clean box instead of a toilet.

My primary purpose is to blunt the nail. I usually remove about 1/3. There are blood vessels in the nail just like with a dog' toenail. The heat generated by the sanding will cause the blood vessel to retract and each time you sant you will be able to go back a little further. The majority of the damage is caused by their toe nails not the spurs, however, cutting the spurs back is a good idea. Spurs can be removed with heat. First immobilize the bird by wrapping with an Ace bandage. Next microwave a small potatoe until it is fully gooked. Imediately place potato on spur, wait 4 or 5 minutes, remove potato, grasp spur with a pair of pliers. Twist back and forth a few times then pull outward. Spur will come right off.
