Surgeries? What kinda doctor? What hospital? I've joked that Sparrow needs to have a wing in my name I've spent a good portion of my life there lol. My first 10 surgeries were at Mott's or Mayo/St. Mary's. The last 30 have been at a combination of Sparrow and Ingham. I've had a few in other states.

Wow, so many newbies! Welcome all! It's wonderful to see you and can't wait to get to know all of you.

Was just getting ready to hit the sack last night, rather this morning around 2:00 a.m., when one of my dogs spotted something outside. A little fox was sniffing around the door to the coop. It was very skinny and young looking. I opened the patio door and yelled at it and it trotted down by the pond about 20 ft. away. Then it just stood there and looked at us as I yelled and the dogs all barked. Wasn't afraid at all. It went back behind the coop so I got my flashlight and went out to see what it was up to. It had gone through the fence and into my neighbors woods but just stood looking at me. Then it squatted and marked and trotted off. I have been leaving the inside screen door open all summer for extra ventilation but I closed it just in case the fox came back. Didn't want it spooking the chickens.

Last weekend my friend came to stay and brought her long-haired dachshund along. He was great with the chickens but Joe, my main roo was not so sure about him. When Binx walked by Joe jumped up and hit him with both feet and knocked him on his butt, then he did it again for good measure. I was very proud of Joe.

These are three of my huge eggs from Scarlett. I'm curious about the double yolkers. If I had an incubator or a broody and hatched them, what would I get? It's not possible to get two chicks from one egg is it? Makes more sense that I would get one large chick who had been feasting on extra food in the egg. Anyone know?

We haven't found any quite like that, yet at least. There was one house that looked like some kids broke in to party, kick holes in walls and lit a fire in the fire place without opening the flue. Smoke built up along the ceiling and made it look like mold but further inspection led us to notice the fireplace had been lit. That was a nice house, even with the minor damage, but the land was crappy and almost useless.
A few houses have simply been old and falling apart, no one living in them in years, others were too small/large or too close to busy roads. We live 1/3 mile away from I-75 and we're trying to get away from that noise.

Riverdale - I checked other listings and property information online and it's listed in Rose township, but says nothing of being in village limits. We'll check out where it lies before putting money down on it for sure.

I also found the original home value and it's being sold for almost half of what it was bought for 6 years ago. BF is having second thoughts on it now taking that into account. He's not sure about having chickens there because even though the neighbors aren't close, chickens may still be disruptive to the area. Folks paid quite a penny to have houses there and they may not think twice about filing complaints. Then again they may also be people that work most of the day and simply have the house for show.
We're gonna see the house again before we decide on it. There's plenty of room for chickens, but he doesn't think goats would do well there. If it were in a different location he said he would probably buy it without even looking inside, but I know he'd want to see the house before jumping in.

I did find the exact house/barn/property combination he wants, 200 miles away in my home town.

He can't make that commute and faked being upset about it. We'll find what we're looking for eventually.

I am actually eager to find out about raising chickens and WINTER, seeing when they start laying and how well they do and if I need to put in more windows come spring. It will be my first winter with chickens.

Im curious to see when my Jersey Giants mature if one is a roo and one a hen and how big their eggs will be. In a way I hope I have one rooster and she will be a broody, but I have an incubator just in case. If I have two hens then I'll get more BIG eggs.
Our one big lab who lives out there again now that the temps have gone merciful is getting up near 13 and slowing down more everyday. Don't know how much longer we'll have her. And ol Mousse, the bigger chocolate still likes pacing and following the 8 week old Jerseys till I finally throw him out of the yard. Im wondering if I could raise a puppy lab with the chickens and it would grow up to be protective of them and think of them as his own?? My husband WOULD want another lab. Sorry I have so much death on my mind, but we let my sister bury her shepherd-husky mix here behind our barn yesterday to save her the $110 they wanted to cremate the dog afrter she put it down. They can't store them for mass cremation cuz they don't have the room so they REQUIRE the owner to pay for cremation of the animal, that sucks. So we offered the place of burial to her, so many of ours are out behind the barn in "doggie holy ground". ok, enough of that.

Well, just found out the house we were looking at (that's only been on the market for a week) is in a bidding war and has already had bids higher than the max we want to pay.

Figures.

Off to do more online home hunting.

I managed to get over to the Bay Co Fair for a little bit this pm and walked around all the animal barns. I did NOT handle, hold or touch ANY chickens, ducks or other poultry, but petted some darling baby goats. When I got home I mixed up about a cup of bleach into a gallon of water and let it set in the sun a minute or two to warm, then I stepped in and washed my feet, flipflops and legs all the way up to my ankles with it. Will that suffice for sanitation before go ing into my own barnyard?? I don't wanna bring anything cruddy home to my flock.
