JenervaThis is probably the friendliest and most helpful thread on BYC. Lots of nice folks here and this grumpy old rooster but as you read the posts you will soon find out for yourself. This is a great thread to ask a question or share a story and I'll look forward to reading your future posts.

Basic rules of Chickenometry.

1. You rarely arrive at the same answer twice.
2. You don't have enough digits to count on
3. Never try to explain the answer to a spouse or SO
4. Broody hens are dangerous to own

Please feel free to add to this list as I am still trying to understand how when I only want 4 laying hens I wound up with 40 birds.

Glad they fit in so easily! They're such docile birds. The ones I had were always hanging around the edge, so I'd sneak them some scratch when the others were too busy with theirs to notice. And funny about him being gentle. Mine....if the girls sqawked at his attentions, he was, like, apologetic. You could see it in his eyes!

But that roo, Beauregard, timid though he was, had a huge heart. One day we heard this strange persistent loud noise, and it was him! Warily and noisily circling a toy stufffed eagle my son had left in their yard, while EVERYONE else was in hiding. Even the big guys. So my hubby had mercy on them all and removed the offender......

Then dark started coming earlier, before I was always home to shut the pop door, and I noticed he had started to hang out right next to it. Strange. A couple of nights later, we found him. It turns out the neighbor's cat had been visiting, he knew it and was guarding the door until we could close it. He must have gone out, and it strangled him.

I was SO mad!!! And sad. That beautiful timid rooster gave his life for the whole bunch of them.

Will you have pictures up soon?

boy did I find out...went to to look for eggs the other day and one of the Brahmas was still in a nest box laying, or working on it...she half stood up and her hackles flared and she let out the meanest growl warning me to stay back. I said "yes Ma'am, maybe later would be better" and out I went. hahahahaha

MrsChickendad - Oh no...I am so very sorry to hear this! I do hope you are ablet to somehow rebuild your flocks...I wish I could offer help in that way! If there's anything I can do, please let me know!

Bethanyrae - It was great to see you Saturday! Hope your gals didn't stink up your van on the way home (for those of you who don't know, Bethanyrae has a serious issue with chicken poo!) - you were cracking me up!

Hope everyone is doing fantastic after such a lovely weekend! We spent a ton of time in downtown Flint at the Back to the Bricks celebration - we have a 1931 "rat rod" (DH's hobby) so he was in heaven looking at all the fancy schmancy cars! HUGE deposit in the marriage bank by me this weekend. Hmmm...timing MIGHT be right to ask for another coop!

I keep telling myself that this year I am going to go to the "Back to the Bricks" celebration but never make it. Maybe next year. Flints downtown was looking real nice when we ate at Blackstones. Time for us to get together for lunch!!

Welcome Jenerva, you will have a ton of fun on this thread.

Opa- Every time I open my big mouth and start with "So I was thinking about the chickens" my better half wants to smack me up side the head. Who would have thought I would be a whiz kid at chicken math, I never was any good at regular math in school. This spring I had 14 girls of varying ages. I knew I was going to have to dispatch some of the older girls so I thought I would get a few chicks to replace them when the time came. Well as of now I have 30 I think and the two little chicks that my broody BO just hatched two weeks ago. Like I said a real chicken math whiz kid.
