They were already seperated, and still are, since they are much younger. They are still in the smaller part of the coop but they have all been free ranging lately. From what I understand they get it from the soil. I do plan on mixing them when they are a bit bigger.
I heard that too. There is an article about this in one of the chicken magazines that I read recently and it said it comes from bird droppings in your lawn. Also, if you have a bird feeder in your yard, you shouldn't let your chickens free range near it.
Yes... Mine do, I grew them this year, and feed mine the seeds, and the rest of the melon on the rind.... They will pick the rind clean and then some! And they will push each other around to get the seeds too. LOL. It was a watermelon slaughter today. They do the same thing with that and cantaloupe and honey rock,
ChickwannaB,
I just PMed you an alternative e-mail addy. Not sure why the school e-mail bounced for you.
I'm getting great responses so far. Thank you so much for responding.
One of the nice things about a project like this is that trends can identified. As we are talking about the birds with cocci, a study like this can track outbreaks and scientifically predict future occurances. I'm getting pretty hyped about the project and the responses from you folks.

I did as well. Watermelon, cantelope and pumpkins for me and the flock.
When I clean these, I give the seeds to the chicks and when I'm done eating what I want, the rind goes in the pen. Within minutes the rinds are picked clean. Anything left over goes into the compost pile.
It sure is neat how the birds can clean out a melon leaving only a thin leathery layer of rind. Today they did that to an apple. It kind of threw me finding a round skin with the guts completely gone. But no worries the dog came along and gobbled that up.
Dealing with a roo experiencing respiratory problems that do not seem to respond to tetracylene. I guess it is not viral but maybe fungal. No other birds are having trouble. I found a post on this with treatment, I guess I will have to give it a whirl.

I sent my answer. As I said, it's debated. We have good neighbors and no one has complained. We have multiple farms in this county. Actually, we live on the property that's been in Aric's family for 80-some years. His great grandparents used to own 400+ acres here, but now we're down to 1 (long but funny story).
I think as long as we keep our neighbors happy we're good. One neighbor is over here almost every day feeding veggies or fruits to our animals. For 2 yrs now he's grown a huge garden knowing no one in his family will eat anything out of it. He just likes to grow stuff. Then he throws it to the animals or gives it to us. No complaints here lol
Another morning off to a great start. Strangely I awoke at 5am to find Hope already up and watching television so I made a pot of coffee, fired up the computer,d u and was ready to start me day when she asked what day was it. After a little discussion and finally checking the calendar we decided it must be Friday. Then she asked if I had taken out the trash. Shoot. For over 30 years our trash has been picked up on Mondays. The first of August the township switched to a different hauler and now our pickup is on Fridays and it's hard to get used to the change. Had Hope not be awake we would have missed it. Evidently her younger brain cells are better at remembering than mine.
Now that the trash is taken care of I can get back to what is important, like coffee and BYC.
