Huh, I always thought the turkey vultures were migratory. I may have to check and see if they really are. A bald eagle has already been snacking on another roadkill deer down the road. Truly awesome birds! I'd rather the deer fill the bellies of the local scavengers. I have ten acres, and can remove the deer to the most remote part without causing any trouble. In fact, I'd be interested in saving the skull, once something has picked it clean of course!

Around my part of the state, the only way to get a roadkill removed is to remove it yourself. Hawks and crows will pick at the carcass but the vultures will be heading south soon so they won't be available for cleanup duty. Usually a couple of deer get hit close enough to my house that the smell would soon become overbearing if I didn't haul them off.

My husband works for the Road Commission and up here they do remove the dead critter or if they are too bad drop some dirt on them. Having a carcass may bring in some scavengers but they are most likely already around. This is just easier food than the chickens. Put it where you want them to show up. During the winter months my husband brought home several deer and staked them in the back field. Not only does it give you interesting things to see, like the Bald Eagles but thins the coyote population because we shoot every one that shows up - all from the comfort of the kitchen window.

I have taken them after they get hit when they are still fresh. I just call the police to get a tag. If they were on my property, I wouldn't bother. We butcher our own, so we wouldn't need the tag to get it butcherd or to donate.

My husband got a doe last night, and we donated it. It goes to the Michigan Food Bank

Howdy gang,

The DNR won't remove the deer, you have to deal with it yourself. If you keep the head, technically, you have to have a permit or license to have in your possession. The only time you can have "parts" of a deer without a permit, is if it has shed it's antlers and you find them on the ground. So if it's a buck, you should at least contact your DNR rep via email, and keep any correspondance that he may say it is ok for you to keep it, or go spend a few bucks and buy a license.

This thread has really gotten huge and so hard to keep up with!

I really need to rehome some geese and ducks... 1 (F) african, 1 (F) emden, 1 (F) fawn indian runner, 1 (M) pekin.... I need them gone by winter. They are to go as pets only, not for food please. I wanted to offer here before I post on craigs list. I have a huge natural pond that they refuse to use cause they cannot touch bottom. I don't want to keep doing the kiddie pool thing with the big "chicken" geese n ducks! The Geese laid lots of great eating eggs and are 2 yrs old. The ducks were from this spring and she's not laying yet although the drake is trying really hard and harrassing everthing, turkey, chickens, and the goose (that was funny)!. Anyway, if you're interested, please PM me. Did I mention they are free? But only on here, I'll be asking some money once they hit craigs list.

WOW! I just took me FOREVER to catch up on that last 2 days worth of posts. WOW. I have a head ache, BUT a good cup of coffee will take care of that... OR maybe its a fake headache and I just WANT coffee... LOL

Anyway, Glad your Geese got a good home Mom, hope you enjoy them York.

As for the deer... Pulling it WAY out back would be good. WAY WAY WAY out back. I hate to smell them. I deliver papers, and I am so glad they get cleaned up fast when they are in-town (burbs) Zeelend... When I used to deliver in Hamilton, Oh man was it aweful. They'd be fine, but you see them swelling up, and once they POP, you need to hold your breathe till you are past them. EEW.

Speaking of Zeeland, Has any one been downtown? I think I might have to drive home thru Zeeland downtown today and take some pictures. They have the most AWESOME scarecrow people displayed. SO cool. I would have never known except I went thru downtown yesterday just for the heck of it, to save some detour mileage.

I had a pretty stressful day Saturday. I thought that I had lost my faverolle hen Buffy. She disappeared for HOURS after rotten Ruby go out and Tiffany and Jace were chasing her around for 15 minutes. All my girls scattered. So, I get up from my nap, (i worked over night) and my mom tells me Rubys out and Jace was trying to get her. I opened the front door, and Yelled "RUBY!" and she comes. She's a good girl. BUT! Buffy is gone when I go out to give afternoon treats... I look and look, even look in the nestbox thinking maybe she'll have laid an egg (no eggs in a week) but nope, not in there either. SO, Now I am kinda bummed. Carl (neighbor) tells me I worry to much.... I am certain she's gone... Poor Mr. Fluffers...

About 7, I go out to give left over dinner to the cluckers, and WOW, there she is! I was so happy! Turns out, she got herself over into Bill's yard, two houses down, and was afraid to leave the yard because of the BIG dog in it. She doesn't know that Angel really is an angel and wouldn't hurt her. Angel is a lassie dog. AND the sweetest dog EVER. She let my son, when he was four, just walk right up to her and pet her. I almost pooped thinking she might bite him, but nope, she just lay her big fuzzy slef down and rolled on her back for belly rubs. ( I get to doggy sit her tonight and tomorrow). Now I am going to have to check Bills yard too when the girls go missing to see if they are over there hiding from the big fuzzy monster!

Just a random question... a weird thought... Do you think they (chickens) know and appreciate when we clean their coop? Or do you think they could care less as along as the night time meanies can't get them? I'd like to think my cluckers are happier with the daily top layer of poop taken off and then the pine shavings cleaned out every 2 weeks... shelves scraped every few days...

I put a window ledge in the coop... They won't use it... Guess maybe cuz as soon as they wake up, they want OUT no matter the temp...
