We had chickens in Hawaii for about 7 years. Mites there are REALLY bad and NO WINTER to kill them off outside. So we used Adams Flea/Tick Spray in the 'ready to use on the pet diluted form' which is basically pyrethrins and water in a spray bottle. We got it at the pet store.
That stuff can kill birds. A friend of ours over sprayed his budgie and it died. So make no mistake, it is poison. But we use the diluted, 'ready to use on animals' bottle - be careful because it is sold in a concentrated form that would really hurt your chickens - and we only ever use one little squirt (not the big SPRAY setting), just a controlled squirt to a direct spot under each wins and one little squirt near the vent. And the mites are killed.
ON A SEPARATE DAY - we would spray the nest boxes and perches.
In Michigan, we are closing chickens up in the coop, so whatever you have put in the coop will be breathed in by the hens and end up in your eggs. And breathing a lot of pyrethrins can't be a good thing. So I spray the hens one day and then on a different day I spray the perches/nests and I leave the windows/door open all day for ventilation. I would not do this in the winter when my coop was not open wide. My problem with Sevin dust is that I don't want it on the floor of the coop because I don't want any hen to ingest any of it. I figure that ends up in my egg.
In Hawaii I used the pyrethrin spray 3 times a year and in Michigan I do it once - in July or August during the big big heatwave. A very little bit of this poison killed a ton of mites and kept the chickens mite free for 3 months in humid hot conditions.

I won't have SEVIN around either, scares the beJezus outta me. But isn't Pyrethrins justmade out of some sort of daisy plant, painted Daisy I think?? Is it still harmful? Ive seen a few fleas on my little chihuahua lately and Im getting worried that I'll have to dust my chickens soon cause of it.

On a happier note, I had a very nice gentleman pull in today and ask about my eggs. He seen my sign. So I told him they were not medicaed or vaccined, and yes FREE RANGED with lots of exercise, fresh air, clean water, and variety of veggie scraps daily. His chiropractor told him to look for a good Free Range egg supply so I'm hoping I'll have a return customer. He was blown away by the size of those Brahma eggs and really pleased when I told him they are often double yolkers too.

Congrats on the egg sale!! Also...I like the sign you quoted..Autumn leaves...Jesus doesn't. Might just have to steal that for our church sign!
I also thought it was made from a flower or plant (the pyrethuium...I know I mangled that spelling....) but any spray strong enough to kill bugs can be harmful I'm sure.

Finally home after a long 15 hour drive back from Mississippi. I just checked on mom and her babies and they are still...SOOOO cute. I have missed them all so much while I was away. I don't get my doggies back until tomorrow ARG....It's weird being in the house without them.

there is a tractor full of teens traveling around the neighborhood tonight singing at the top of their lungs. If I wasn't so tired I would be amused. I know my neighbors with small kids are totally NOT.

Permethrin is not natural. It's a synthetic chemical pesticide and is not approved for use for organic production. You're all probably thinking of Pyrethrin which from a Chrysanthemum.

OK... I know I said earlier that I wouldn't get a thing done that I wanted to get done. Well, I guess I musta changed my mind... I am a woman after all, and I understand we are notoriously bad for that. SO, I am having a big clean out the garage sale tomorrow. My dad has/had so much.. CRAP. Its amazing. I am not even pricing the stuff. Well some of it is, but for the most part, just offer me something and get it out of here. If I am lucky, I will be able to push my broke down bunny in the garage and look like I am never home all winter.

I got all the hedge cleaned up and trimmed back. THe new trees that were coming up, there out too. I can actually see the posts from the old fence again. Less leaves to rake too. HEHEHE.

Now I just need to paint the coop and fix the coop roof. I hope I can find where the problem is, otherwise it will be tarped all winter. I hate that idea. I also need to get inside the coop and install the hooks for the water and feed. I have the power line in for the heated waterer. I might put in a light on a timer.. I don't know. I have a light... I just don't know. The dottes, leghorn, and silkies are due to start laying this month, so I think maybe I will. Have it go on about 6 am, when Mr Fluffers usually starts his wake up call...

I just got a call from a friend who says he has a friend who runs a shop and is not afraid of the bunny and its hi-pro engine. Might be able to get a new one/fixed for parts and some, but not like the dealer and looking at 3000, but half that. We'll see. Still a lot of money. I still owe 3000 on it, so maybe it'll be worth a new engine. I was thinking of calling the VW consumer line and pitching up a giant fit and see what can be done. Its only a 5 yr old car! I won't tell them I use it for papers thou. LOL. I think that'd defeat the purpose. I only drive 1500 miles a month! TOTAL, work and regular.

My boys may be going up to Ravenna in the AM. Neighbors aren't sure yet, but will let me know in then. I think I will miss them though, they are so funny. They are coming of age, and keep trying to mount the pullets. THEY TAG TEAM THE GIRLS! They even tried with Buffy and I swear she just about took their fuzzy little heads off.

Have a great night all, and enjoy the weekend. Everyone who's going to chicken stock, or where ever, have a great time. Take pics and post, so I can live vicariously thru you. LOL. I want to go... I can't go though.

Isn't it just?
Came home from work tonight and was watching my 6 remaining bantams on the deck with the barn cats and it occurred to me that one of my silver sebright pullets didn't quite look like the other. Well, I started looking at all 4 of the sebrights, but that one really stuck out. Was that saddle and hackle feathers I was seeing? No, couldn't be. This chicken barely has a comb and I've never seen it even attempt to crow. I had to wait to pick her up, but once I did, sure enough if that darn pullet wasn't a rooster.

I posted on the what breed/gender to confirm and the overall opinion is a sebright mix roo because he isn't hen feathered like he should be. Well, that makes 6 roos out of 9 banties.

Honestly. They are just the cutest chicks in the world, but I am never going to buy a bantam again with my great luck.

I thought I had bad bantam luck with 3 out of 7 roos!

Hope chicken stock is a blast for all of you have get to go. Unreliable vehicles and lack of cash will keep me in my own area. Montague is have a pumpkin roll festival day tomorrow, I think I will pop in there and check it out. It is a nice event for kids.
