Brutal winter, omg!

So glad I live in the UP's "Banana Belt" of slightly milder weather and somewhat less snowfall. Lake Michigan helps warm us up.... a tiny bit!

Best Geese Ever!

They've been here a week. Nary a honk. (Though I keep waiting for them to realize that they live here and aren't just visiting, and start giving the alarm as appropriate. But it's pretty quiet here, so maybe this is just the way they'll be. And I need to find something louder to annoy the neighbors...) (Not most of the neighbors. Just the one who anonymously complained to the road association president--now there's a position of power--about the existence of my chickens. Not the noise, not the smell--because neither is even detectable from any other house on the road--just the fact that they existed. Despite the fact that we are expressly zoned such that I could have up to 40 birds, and there is nothing in the association agreement to prohibit livestock. Still don't know who the busybody was who complained. But at this rate, the geese are not likely to smoke him or her out.)

Today the DH and I clipped flight feathers on one wing each of Penelope and Libby. (Who improbably made it over the fence for a third time yesterday, though once again they would not abandon Henry, stuck on the other side...) They were absolute sweethearts about the clipping. Just some very minor avoidance of getting picked up, then no fuss at all about being held and getting feathers trimmed. I asked the DH if he wanted to hold or trim. He said he'd assumed he would hold. However, I have seen him hold our dogs for nail trimming and blood draws, neither of which I ask him to do anymore.

So I held, he did a fine job of trimming, and he is super impressed with the behavior and disposition of the goosers (as am I)... "I was expecting that to be much more of an ordeal," he said. "They are such nice geese!"

Had a great time at Fowlfest. Our white cochin pullet got a RV, also got a RV with our bantam white rock rooster, and a BV and RV with two wheaten ameraucana cockerels. So we were pretty happy. Wynette got a Reserve American (I think) with her black Jersey Giant pullet. What a nice bird!

We didn't come home with any new birds. We do have a bunch of wheaten ameraucana cockerels (come and get 'em—save 'em from freezer camp!) and some bantam cochin boys for free!

Those pink silkies were still there when I left at 10:30 Sunday. I do believe you could make your own with a can of hair dye and a white silkie.

Yup good goosers. I am surprised that Miss P is not a talker. Her mom Jazzabelle sure is. She will stand behind Homer and give him an earful. Honkhonkhonkhonkhonkhonk.....
Mine are not excessive honkers but when Gisele lets one out it end in a high pitched screech lol.
Penelope was hand raised along with her siblings. They all move away from your hand as if they dont want to be petted but when picked up they are calm.
A co-worker hatched them and she and her family handled them alot. She told me that they would have a campfire at night and they would sit around the fire and everybody had a goose on their laps. They was going to take a picture but they thought that they would look like a bunch of hillbillies

.
Gisele is being a brat right now and chasing/herding the turkeys. My co-worker kept Lucy and Buddy.

Not enough honking? We can change that. All you need is one good honker and the rest will join in.... where do you live again? I can do a drive-by goose drop.

Mine woke me up three times last night. Surely we can annoy a neighbor or two.
