Taprock I am so sorry to hear of your troubles

. Call animal control and report what happened. They may not want to do anything, but at least you are on record. If the dog comes again and you can catch him instead of chasing him off, you will have the prooof you need when animal control picks him up.

Msue, that is a lovely little horse.

taprock, sorry for your loss, you must have been steaming. I would call animal control and tell them what happened then ask what the law is if you catch him on your property again. You don't want to get into trouble, so if you need to shoot him you may have to give him a quick funeral. Funny how dogs can just run off.

msue - love the costume!

Thanks all. We live in the country so shooting isn't a problem. I know I'd only be able to shoot a dog if it had a bird in it's mouth and then I'd cry because it's not hunting it's a pet and it's not really it's fault. In our county animal control is a joke, they may show up the end of the week. So anyway...

Here's an update and I'll try not be too long winded but .... My husband called the neighbor, neighbor replies the dog has been on the porch - I happen to know he wasn't home at the time because he drove in while I was tearing about trying to find chickens. Husband tells neighbor if the dog comes after the chickens again he's going to shoot it, neighbor says fine, they have had the conversation before. Neighbor's wife calls husband and asks how I am, he says you call her, so she does. She's sorry, it's her dog. Her husband cut the underground fence last month and it hasn't been fixed, she says it will be. Want's to "replace" my birds and I told her they couldn't be. I was too flustered to think of the cost. I don't remember much of what was said, although I mentioned how upset my son was. I told her I hoped her dog didn't get sick from eating my chickens. I lied, I hope the dog throws up chicken parts all night!

Anyway after a rotten afternoon, about 6 my son spots my little bantam Sizzle headed in from the field about 200 yards behind the coop and house.

This is my little Ms. Moppit who has never in her life been more than 6 foot from the coop. Then we discovered one of the button quail had hatched during all the excitement. 22 more are still in the incubator hopefully to hatch soon.
So I lost a guinea- Honey, a Blue Cochin-Blueberry who was so sweet and waited for me in the morning to pick her up off the roost, and a bantam Silkie- Dusty. I have one injured guinea in the dog crate in the basement for observation but I think she will go back out tomorrow - just minor injuries. So as sad as I am, I feel very fortunate out of 38 chickens and 6 guineas and who knows how much time the dog had, I only lost three.

There is that verse that says "the Lord giveth, and the Lord taketh away, Blessed be the name of the Lord." I guess that's how I feel.

Thanks for the compliments guys.....Bat wings don't compare to Farmer Andy's DW costumes.....lol Dang that gal can sew. Anyway, got the pines shavings down in the coop and it's good to go. Those 2 BOs that keep hanging out with me while I was cleaning literally tried to sneak in each time I opened the door.
Taprock....sorry to hear about your day

. Definitely call animal control so it will be on report. You have talked to the neighbor, they apologize, said they will fix the fence, said it won't happen again., etc.....There is no guarantee even if they are sincere in their efforts. If you don't think you'd be able to bring yourself to shooting the dog then just use a pellet gun or one that won't do any great harm. Maybe getting pegged in the rear a few times will halt his behavior or at least make him think twice before he goes after another chicken.

Taprock, I'm sorry for the 3 you lost and very glad your little Ms. Moppit came home.

M.sue and Farmer Andy, nice photos. My kids would gladly trade parents to have someone who can sew costumes that well. Speaking of which, there's a lot of grumbling going on about that this year. They all decided they want store bought ones instead of mom's homemade ones.

Believe it or not, my girls, 12 & 15, chose cute & adorable this year. What? How did we go from dead zombie cheerleader and lady pirate to southern belle and little red riding hood?

They're terribly confused as to the order of things.

I have 2 little lavender bantam ameracauna pullets that need a new home - just too many chickens for the winter coop. I hatched them out myself from eggs from little ameracauna mom here on byc. One of the 4 that I have just layed her first egg last week,a perfect little blue egg. I am driving down to Lansing this weekend and could bring them along. They look like little grey doves. They also move pretty fast, so the pic is a little blurry.
