Could we be getting close? My Buffs (Crispy and Extra) are squatting, singing(?) and keep going in to the little coop.

The BSLs and I have had a little ritual that we do. They come up to me and squat and I grab them (gently) by the rump and massage their tail with my fingers. Maybe they think I'm a big rooster but they sure do posture. Today, the BOs came over for their turn.

Came home last night to find Nugget kinda just standing in the run, rather than racing as usual. Her hind feathers were a little crusty, so we brought her in for a bath just in case she was egg bound. An hour later, wrapped in a warm towel she reared up, squeaked a few time then died. So sad! We started with 4 in April and are down to 1.5. 1 died in June, we think cocci. Our .5, Cat, took ill in Sept. with what I think was gape worm, but recovered. (many of you helped with her when she first got sick) She has full energy now, but can't walk and doesn't lay, otherwise a happy girl. Only Cinnamin is a normal hen! Am I crazy to want to add more now? Or should we wait til after winter? Am having the dangest time trying to find pullets anywhere locally. ( I've been looking to add even before last night, assuming Cat can't last forever in her condition)

What happen to Broil? Wasnt she the buff laying?
Green with envy over you getting those two bantum chickens. They are beauties.

Grrr I get so frustrated with cheap people. We take a lot of time and put effort into the dog houses/chicken coops and people expect them for next to nothing? Not even the cost of the wood! NOT! I may say the price and "best reasonable offer" (because or best offer isn't enough!) but that doesn't mean not even 1/4 of the cost of the wood! I have even had some people who act the same way with our eggs. One lady thought that since she lives a few houses from us she could get eggs for .50 and an empty carton. HUH? A guy told me "Since you can't just give me a dozen of those darn duck eggs than I guess your lazy ----ing fat ass needs to get a job!". That priceless one was just last week.

I told Aric I think we need to stop doing all this crap. Just keep 2 ducks and 3 chickens. Of course he loves building things so that couldn't stop. Then he reminded me I would be really upset with myself if I gave up all these animals. I had to tell myself it's the non-animal-owning people who don't realize how much goes into all of this!

Ok, I'm done venting. Sorry lol

Oh man, yes I am sorry for your loss Raz.

I have mixed feelings on the subject of shooting a dog on my property. I understand the whole natural instinct and all but there are just some irresponsible dog owners out there. One of our neighbors has two standard poodles that are vicious. One of them broke free from their leash one day, came in to my neighbors yard and attacked their lab puppy. Thank GOODNESS my bichons weren't out because the same damage that this poor puppy recieved from this poodle would have surely killed my dog. This poor puppy had to stitches and antibiotics and the owners of the poodles DENIED everything and refused to pay the vet bill.

Even after the incident they had the nerve to still walk their vicious dogs down our street. So every day when we saw them we would let out our crazy rescue who would tear those poodles to pieces if they should ever cross the invisible fence boundary line. (she's actually pretty darn scary when she wants to be) The whole block of us neighbors pretty much stared them down with our dogs for a couple days and we haven't seen them ....oh in over a year.

Sorry to hear what has happened to your chickens. My heart feels for ya. As for wanting to get more I say why not? If you can't find young pullets you could try ones that are a little older. You are already equipped for them so go for it. I would just make sure that you throughly sanitize the coop before you do.

Broil started laying on Sept. 13. She was 22/23 weeks old. I get an egg a day from her. She is my egg machine.
Bake started on Oct 19 and Broast started on the 20th (27/28 weeks). They layed on alternate days but Bake is the one I lost this weekend.
Those 3 are/were my BSLs.

Crispy and Extra Crispy are my Buff Orpintons. They were certainly, um, hormonal(?) today.

The BOs are quite a bit bigger than the BSLs so it will probably look pretty strange to add a couple of banties.

I wasn't too sure about bantams. We had them when I was a kid and they were mean! But everyone here seems to think that they are pretty nice so I'll give them a shot.

PS I sold a dozen eggs today.

Woot! on selling the eggs. I think my girls are getting back up to laying again! So hopefully I will be selling eggs again soon.

My bantams are sweetie pies....except my two silkie meanies. Gosh they are moody and while they don't attack me (unless I try to take an egg from them prematurely) they do like giving hell to the other bantams.

Those little fluffy devil ground parrots just crack me up.

Keyt, did you kick the backsidehole in the nuts? I mean, then you wouldn't be lazy would you? cuz you would have had to lift your knee up to nail his rotten greedy stingy freeloading... I can't believe anyone would say that to you! I don't know you personally, but I know you aren't lazy. What a total pig. Oh, no, not a pig, thats an insult to pigs. What a piece of poop... NO, he is the fungus that grows on pond scum. I just want to so hit him for you.
