gotta get feed soon, I recently became aware that some feed has sawdust filler in it. The ingredient "other plant material" is filler and this is common practise evidently. Not sure I like this idea and have changed my feed supplier. Anyone have any insight into this?

Update on Frankenstein (hawk attack survivor)- she's doing great - lonely and wanting to get out and run....We're going to sneak her back with the other babes tomorrow when we let them out for a short free range period...
I have some older birds; think I can assume if their combs are pale that they are not laying??
thanks -

Is everybody out partying it up on this fine Friday night?

How old is "older"? Have you check them for mites?

4-6 yrs old - no mites; we simply haven't turned hens over and are beginning to do that now. Hubby went to Dewitt Football game and I'm catching up around the house....just tucked all the girls (and a few roosters) into bed for the night!

Had a college visit today at Northern Michigan University in the U.P. I might have been close to some of our members here.

Huston -- That's certainly a possibility then. If you've got low egg production out of them you could section off one or two at a time and see if they are laying, but at that age -- assuming here hatchery birds -- and with pale combs, etc. I would probably assume they will need to be replaced in the near future.
