I got my chicks last spring on March 25 and raised them in the house in a 100 gallon water tank as a brooder. They went ourside in mid-June.

If I order them now, the apparent hatch date is first week of April, 2012. So other than transit, they will be indoors until June.

The coffee has finished brewing and I am now istting here waiting on sunrise which is just one more reason to dislike winter. Having sunrise come 3 hours after I awake is really irratating. I enjoy waking early, actually I'm always quite pleased to discover that I have woke up, as it is a time to read the BYC posts, work the crossword, and spend some time in quiet reflection.

I would recommend that anyone planning on adding new chicks first inquire who on the Michigan thread will have chicks available in the breeds you are looking for. I know Wynette has BCMs and JGs. One of the advantages is that you can get the number of chicks you want. They don't have to be shipped so you avoid getting a bird that possibly is stressed. And the biggest plus of all is that you get to make a road trip that allows you to renew or make friendships with fellow BYCers.

There was some discussion the other day about frostbite and what it looks like. Perhaps this picture of frostbite in its early stage might clear that up. What eventually happened with this rooster was that everything from the black up atrophied and fell off resulting in a dubbed bird.

They DO stop laying and the reason she is chased now is that the pecking order has probably changed with her being on the nest constantly. They usually get "crabby" and may fuss at you when you try to move them .

Agreed, no eggs from the broodies. I removed Blueberry aka "Ms Cranky Pants" from the flock becuase she was gettting picked on by the other girls. They were particularly crabby that she chose the favorite nest box to occupy.

I finally got another bantam egg yesterday....it feels like it's been months since I've seen one. 5 bantams....1 egg.

Yes, I am pretty sure. These aren't technically Jerry's birds. They came from project eggs he hatched out from a breeder in Ohio for a Lavendar project so I don't suspect that they will have BCM coloring. He sold them to me becuase they weren't the right coloring he was looking for (I just wanted chocolate brown eggs). My luck, both of them turned out to be very boy-ish.

You can't see the hackle feathering in the pictures but I am pretty sure these are boys (I could be wrong). I posted a picture when I got them and to my dismay...one of them already had a nicely formed comb on day #2! They also currently stand taller than any of the girls I have.

I also have a younger FBCM boy that has already coppered and looking very pretty. He wouldn't come out the coop a photo op.

If we get some sun today I'll see if I can get a picture of him.

Hey....you could borrow my two. They are broody about every 3 weeks (hence....no stinking eggs from them

I have one little bantam hen and I think I have gotten 4, maybe....maybe 5 eggs total. Her eggs are extremely few & far between.
I always catch her sitting on everyone elses.
