Brrr¹ the coop door blew open last night (the people size one) snow was all over the floor. I scooped out what I could and fixed the door latch. The ducks won't go in their shelter despite the weather. Back to work in the am.

Love the names for the Icelandic too. Lars came to mind.

Stay warm.

Hi everyone!

Cold cold cold...make it go away! Im fine with a winter of 40 degree weather...do not need this crap.
I have a hen outside who wants to be in a stew pot. She has been going on and on and on since four a.m. Just complaining to hear herself complain, Im sure. Ive looked out there, nothing amiss except the weather.

Mama hen and her five babies are doing very welll...cute little turken mutts...

The two inside the house are doing well too, except one is a bully to the other one. Much bigger too. I suppose the size differences reflect the Standard roo vs. banty hens. Cute little critters. Even if they ARE messy.

I hope you are all okay.
Welcome to the new people.

Im off to work now....hate that I have to go outside. Shouldnt they have invented teleporting by now?

brrrr....good morning folks. It's my first day back at work in 2 weeks. :: sigh :: I guess it couldn't last.

Welcome newbies!

:: eyeballs Farmerboy's signature :: You have Icelandics too? :: looks over at my incubator :: Nope....I must wait. Have to get rid of the roosters first.

:: twitches ::

I hope everyone has a wonderful day!

OMG - it IS a small world. I know all the Goodnoes. Jean used to be my best friend until her and Duane moved to Wisconsin.

Good morning Michigan, 8 degrees here heading for a high of 17. Whoopee. Happily we did finally get a few inches of snow so at least it looks pretty. I actually like snow, if it's going to be cold anyway. My wild birds have been hitting the feeders hard, my pileated woodpeckers are going through the suet like crazy.

I honestly don't think I would want to worry about chicks this time of the year. With the sometimes brutal cold here that is what I would do - worry.

mornin...brrrr nothing like changing chicken water when it is 4 below with this wind ekkk.....being new to raising chickens this is my first winter.....do u guys leave them locked up ?? i open there little door and let them decide...is that ok ? my run is traped pretty well for the wind....i would post pics but havent fig. it out on here yet...thx for help...peace lizzz

I think the pictures are on another computer so I have to find them. But not long after I moved here, I tamed a female squirrel by feeding her peanuts. By mid-summer she would come to me and hop in my lap when I sat on the porch. She even brought a couple of litters to visit. Not exactly groping but kind of close. I can usually tame the squirrels each year to take the peanuts from my hand.

I write the # of eggs on the calendar as well, but in Dec. I started dating and weighing them and entered the data into a spreadsheet for class. We have to do a bio-stats final project so I was thinking of seeing if there is a correlation between egg production and hours of available daylight. I may not have enough chickens for good stastical analysis...

I built my coop inside the garage but the hen door is just a hole that is open all the time. On the outside, I stacked hay bales to make a little tunnel so that rain and snow don't blow in. So the hens can come and go as they please. Mine are out all day long unless they go in to lay. They also have shelter outside in the form of a 10' x 20' tent-garage, they go in there if it is extremely windy or rainy. But as often as not, they are out scratching in the elements.

Also, I have no added heat or light in the coop per learning from folks here.
