I have to suggest that you pen up your friendliest birds because one of my little lavendar ameracauna bantams flew up onto a guest's plate while she was holding it to enjoy the food. She was a little freaked out at first, but then enjoyed Tulip sitting on her arm while she ate

Oh my goodness. We were just informed that our daughter and her fiance want to have their wedding at our house this July.

So, what do you do with all these free ranging chickens? There's going to be a lot of "stuff" here and there......I can't lock them up for a month ahead of the wedding! aughhh....we have a lot of thinking to do.

years ago I had to learn written shorthand in high school. The teacher told us that notes were due every Wed at 6th period. She told us to remind ourselves about them when when we heard the local test sirens go off Wed at 1:00, 5th period. we were supposed to think, "Notes...notes for class."
To this day, like Pavlov's darn dog, every time I hear that siren I think 'Notes....." LOL!!!
and I was JUST KIDDING about us learning text speak... I can't even decipher when they initial all the chicken breeds here...
I remember NOTHING about the shorthand I learned. I could read YOUR note above however, fairly easily. Maybe I have hope....

No, we do not. I would never get it right and I highly doubt my kids would willingly sit here and try to interpret page after page for me.

Your rant was thoroughly enjoyed; I'm right there with you. My younger -- adult and plenty old enough to know better -- sister is a prime example. Some of her Facebook statuses make me want to beat her with a dictionary.

before I forget, loynfuzz your daughter is beautiful, and looks very happy. I would pen them up for the big day maybe day before to, If you can get some move able poultry fence. it works very well, if you don't have any younger kids maybe you could hire some neighbor kids to hose the yard down, walk ways and drive. Good luck, don't want anyone sitting on a chicken gift.

I also would like to know the answer to that one. The first chick I hatched out is pretty good sized now and it's not the food he waste-it's the water !!! He likes to take his clod hopper big feet and scratch at the water er until he gets it tipped over !! I put it on a board, i put it up on something so it's not as accessible to his big feet and he still manages to tip it over. And I have 2 smaller ones in with him. I have to change their litter at least 4 times a day because he gets it all wet. What is the answer ?

what kind of water er do you have? we had the little red things that you put a jar into. we used a plastic peanut jar and DH put an eye hook in the bottom(witch became the top) put a dab of hot glue on the base of hook so as not to leak when filling. and hung the jar from the screen over the brooder. You can build a box with hardware cloth over the top, put the feeder on top and the scratched out feed will fall in the box and can be reused.

Good morning Michigan Hey I just wanted to drop ya a qwik note. In the Feb/Mar issue of Back Yard Poultry magazine there is an article Titled Vaccinations for the Small Flock owner. This article was written by a fellow (Lady) BYCer and friend. While I have not been able to get my hands on this issue/article. I am sure it will be very good based on my knowledge of Cynthia. Rumor has it that the magazine will hit the Newsstands after Jan 31.

On a side note. Since you folks have welcomed me and been so kind. I hope you don't mind if I drop in here now and then for a bit. I will try to mind my manners and not cause any problems (just need some where to get a BYC fix). Seems it is time for me to step away from my home thread at least for a bit.

Just got my BYP mag. today. will check out that article. I love that magazine. lots of good advice.

If you have a couple pieces of scrap wood, you can make a little hold down for the waterer. Make a bridge to catch one side of the waterer and a small pivot piece you can swing to catch the other side of the waterer.

Its not a cross-beak, but the tip of it keeps her beak from closing all the way.
I think I could take nail clippers and nip just the tip and her beak would be able to close and she would be able to eat more than she scatters.

Opa's suggestion is very good. you could use an emery board also.

not to happy about the white stuff on the ground this AM, hate driving on ice. .... It has been a nice winter, is supposed to get up in the upper 30's again next week, Nice to not have to worry about leaving early for work. was a nice day today once the snow stopped and the sun came out.

Hope all you coffee drinkers got your coffee today, You should be in good moods tomorrow. ... forgot who it was that was complaining about 8 eggs from 15 hens. we got 3 today from 21 hens. I balled them out when I got home from work and told them they had better do better tomorrow. They don't like the snow either

OK I gotta admit guilty as charged. While I ain't the best with spellin and punkuation. I can do OK and since I see it do bother some of ya I will try any mynd my mannerz when I comes to visit. OK really see this is all just part of who / what Chicken Rustler is. However I can see that if I don't wanna get run outta here I better try my best.

Please keep in mind that I do have a somewhat dysfunctional space bar. So some of my stuff may run together due to me failing at proof-reading.

That is the kind he has. With the little red base. I can't really hang it up at this point because he is in a tub in my spare bathroom. I need to take him out to the brooder coop and use a bigger one for him. Even though I have heat out there I just get worried that he will get cold. I really need this Rooster as he is my Blue Marans Rooster with feathered legs. I tell him everyday he's lucky I need him or he would be gone lol.

Y'all sure are busy. I skimmed through many posts today. ';lkjhgd [ just ran a finger over some keys, ain't cussing] Buffy, our broody hen is still broody. Skinny and not looking well. Still here. I sure hope she is not in pain. How does one know. No signs. I'm going to try posting pictures of her and the other buff. Check out the combs. Gidget & Bertha --left Bryan holding Broody Buffy --- right Can't get this picture posting. YET !!!! At least I got both of them posted. I think!

Gotta get her to eat Bob. Try some warm cooked oatmeal?

OH! And the chicks... How the world do I stop the food waste? Seems more food comes out of the chick feeder and ends in the litter... I put the feeder up on a 10 inch wide board, the just knock it off... I leave it on the shavings, it ends up full of shavings... And no... They are not cleaning up the ness either. Lol... Kinda like my boys. Lol. So, what should I try different?

I'm having the same problem. I put the chick feeder in a big ceramic birdbath top so when they scratch it out it is contained in that and they have to eat that before I fill the feeder again.

This might seem like a silly question, because who takes their chickens to a vet, but I have a sick rooster that I don't want to lose. Does anyone know of a vet that takes care of chickens anywhere near Lapeer County?

I know Dr. Wood at Countryside Vet Hospital in Howell http://countrysidevethosp.com/ sees birds. He works on wild swans, cranes, etc. One of the vets in his practice also does exotic birds as well. Might try them, though not really close to you. Chicken Grandma knows where the chicken vets are, maybe she can help.

Mom - I agree w/Opa. I would use a dremel to grind a bit off the beak. The clipper might accidentally break a piece off or leave it jagged. I use a dremel on my macaw who has a scissor bite.

Beautiful orchids! I bought two of them on sale at Lowe's and am trying not to kill them.

The house smells so good right now. Just took a pan of apple-pear crisp out of the oven. Think I'll eat some BEFORE dinner!

Nice and sunny this afternoon for awhile. I'm still sick and didn't even get out of bed until 12:30 p.m. Stuffed up, sore throat, sneezing, coughing, yuck. Am finally able to taste a few things again and can finally smell again as well. I let the chickens out and while they were free ranging I closed the coop up and let Mama and babies have the run of it for about an hour to stretch their legs a bit. I can see the one little black one is getting white barring on it's wings, so that must be the barred rock egg. Can't wait to see what they are each going to look like when they start getting feathers. They are so cute to watch as Mama calls them to "come look at this tasty morsel I found!" I sneak her grapes as a treat but have to do it when the others are outside because I don't have enough for all of them.

Seem to be having a lot of fox activity at night. Almost every night I take the dogs out for the last pee break before bed, I hear the foxes barking and yipping. Haven't actually seen one since the last attack, but they're out there. I feel sorry for the chickens and ducks over in the gravel pit because I don't think he has a coop for them. That's where I see the hawks for the most part, so it's probably a buffet for the predators.

beautiful orchids. I had a house once that I went to great lengths to clean the yard in. The previous owners had a junk pile... Masonry crap and such. My ex hubby and I spent several weekends and several dump trips to get it out of there... So it had this lovely ivy all along the perimeter of the back yard, with vinca mixed in with that. Underneath a makeshift shed we removed came up a huge surprise. The most beautiful orchid. Just one. It was like the yard was saying thank you. I put a patio in the hard way to enjoy my work. I love gardening. I love a pretty yard... Or even just a pretty space in the yard...

well anyhooo... The movie was very cute. I enjoyed it very much. Only one thing did not follow the book, but that's ok, it did not detract from it at all. So I give it a 4 out of 5. Good giggle, amid think safe enough to watch with kids around.
