Congratulations on all the new chicks!

Nova- Don't let your hen be crop blocked very long - they go downhill really fast with that condition.
Dr. Bader can slice open and remove the blockage and then you can hand feed her with Kaytee baby bird handfeeding formula $10 at the pet store, and keep her inside the house for warmth in a crate if you want to save her. The chicken cannot survive very long with an impacted crop - she needs to take in a lot of food to keep warm outside. You'll have to figure out if she can eat and if she cannot, then act quickly. If she cannot eat, at least get her warm.

On trimming chickens nails - I only had one hen whose nails got too long because she was real old and stood around a lot. Of the other 12 chickens over 11 years, I have never trimmed a nail because in the free ranging, they need the nails for scratching.

Glad it is a normal thing. The one little guy looks pretty sad still. Sorry if I wasn't clear - I waited until all the eggs had hatched. Usually I wait until everyone is mostly dry to move them to the brooder but a couple hours after the last guy was out of the egg they still didn't appear to be drying off. That's when I moved them and discovered they really were dry. This time was easy - didn't get impatient, because all 5 pip to out was less than 24 hours. I was worried I was going to have to open it to add water, but discovered with a straw, funnel, duct tape and the vent plug pulled I could add water without opening it up!

Sounds perfect then! And lucky you with such a quick hatch. Makes things easier for sure. Sorry I misunderstood. :)

hello everyone...chatterboxes...

Hope everyone had a good weekend. Randy, so sorry about extra-crispy.. any clue?

I am trying to rally my family to go out for chinese food tonight. I dont want to even start creating something to eat in the kitchen.
I cant even get the other humans here to sweep the floor today, much less clean the kitchen, and I am not going to do both.

I just discovered the babies have ventured out in to the actual backyard. I think that means they are growing up. I dont really recall how old they are- about nine weeks? Guessing.

My lone silkie egg is due to hatch on Sunday. That time seems to have gone by fast. Congrats to all with all the new babies.

The weather man is saying that winter arrives tomorrow. UM, I protest. Winter missed its chance. Now, if it gets here tomorrow, it wont leave until May...I just know it. My tree has buds on it. My crocus and daffodills are coming up. NO WINTER NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

It *is* supposed to cool down beginning tomorrow, but it's also supposed to warm back up next week.

Mom2....I have been craving Chinese....Sweet & Sour Shrimp is my fav. Swing by & pick me up, I'll be waiting on the porch!!

McGuyver.....My mother was totally in love with him, never missed an episode, wonder what ever became of him?

Thanks guys on the nails trimming compliments. The pant leg was a great idea thanks to Opa. I did have to use a smaller on my little bantam hen though...she's such a peanut.
The dremel wasn't loud at all, it had variable speed 1 -5 and we had it set on 2 I think. My DH said that maybe if we had turned it higher it would of cauterized the vessels. I think Opa even told me that... Learn & live.

Chicken Grandma.....my GF never trimmed his flocks nails neither from what I can remember. A few of mine had daggers, one ripped or split....blood everywhere. I figured if I to had trim to a few I might as well do them all. I feel good about doing so and now I'm glad that I have the tools on hand for when the occasion rises next.....plus a little experience to boot!

Hillbilly....I'll pass on the helping with the taxes. Doing ours plus my mothers is enough. Thanks for the offer anyway even though I don't recall what previous post you were referring to. lol

MSue - here is a question for your nail trimming - would you have been able to do it on your own, no extra set of hands? I know my DH won't help me, I might get some effort from my son but I can see his help ending before the job is done. I haven't tried it because I don't think I can do it on my own even with the pant leg!

On my own.....NO WAY......You need two sets of hands.......it was so easy....I held and talked to, he filed.

Hey guys...so I'm baking tonight and I noticed something different about one of my eggs....is this FERTILE??? We've seen "Big Boy" (marans) out there getting busy with the girls kind of awkwardly...lol What do you guys think? Is it wishful thinking?

here's a closeup

Richard Dean Anderson played Colonel Jack O'Neill for almost 10 years on Stargate SG-1, I heard he quit to hang out with his daughter. I'm sure he could be googled.

Back in the day, when I was in JR HIGH, I had an art teacher who looked just like McGuyver, and if you dared call him that, then he'd kick you out of his class. I always thought that if he didn't want to be called it, he shouldn't do his dangdest best to look like him. Right down to the haircut... I realise that was a popular hair cut at the time, but if you hated the look alike comments... I think he dug it, but was just an ... backside hole... He hated HATED HAAAAATED my artwork. Never gave me over a C on anything. Mr. Van Heest....
