Well, two of our chicks died in two days. We are switching to straw bedding. I think they got bound up by the pine shavings. I hope we don't lose anymore.

MOM. If you starve your body of nutrition, vitamins, minerals and protein in particular, you will have a very rough and long recovery. Your bone marrow needs to replace many of those blood cells that will not be viable any longer, and your white blood cells will also be affected, making you more susceptable to infections for a while. You do need to avoid fats and caffeine, but not all foods. Please take care of yourself and rest up.

I had steamed veggies and a salad. Lets see how that works.

Sorry for your loss, that sucks. I will keep that in mind though, as mine are still on shavings also.

That sounds pretty neutral and nutritious, I bet you'll do ok.

So much to my disappointment...when I left work at 5 in Lansing it was raining literally sheets. I had to drive slow because my wipers would not remove the water fast enough. Im thinking ya, we need this!! I get out to my house near Charlotte...hardly even rained at all here. Poo. Looks like enough for my grass seeds though, for now. Took the chickens out to the tilled garden again while I painted some more on their coop, they had fun and their feet were so muddy it was quite hilarious. Back in their brooder now chilling. Now for dinner...think I'm gonna make some venison steaks & peppers/onions w/some black pepper sauce. Yum!

how hard is it to do a fecal? and how strong a scope do you need.??
sure would like a cheaper way to check, $23 a pop and 23 birds,,, can't afford to do individual tests....sure would make treating or not treating a much easier choice

Was going to let people know how keeping water and food outside for the winter worked....GREAT! coop stayed so much cleaner. We added a covered area in the run and kept the water and feed outside. water heaters 1 in the base and one a cookie tin heater, worked great. I was able to raise the feed about 4' at night and had no rodent problems. mixed pine shavings and hay on the floor and poop boards inside. took about 5 min to clean poop boards and refill with bedding from the floor. plan to do it this way next winter...

agree....Mom you need nourishment or your recovery will take longer, maybe nibble small portions of protein,fruit and veggies all day instead of an actual meal

I've never done a fecal on a bird, but if they're anything like mammals, it's very easy. You need a scope w/at least 10x and 40x I'd say. That seems pretty expensive!

Three chicks are out. 2 Showgirls and a Sizzle who is obviously a rooster already! I had one Polish die in it's shell. It looked like there was too much liquid in the egg and it drown. I wondered if that is what happens when an air cell detaches.
