Starting to think about feed for my chicks coming in a few more weeks. Those of you that are familiar w/ TSC - they basically carry two brands of feed. Dumor and Purena. Any endorsements or cautions of either one? Planning on 15 chicks. Will I need a 50# bag of starter? I know they say to feed starter for 4-8 weeks. Do they need the medicated starter for that long or should I just get a small bag of medicated starter followed by regular unmedicated starter? I am not aware of any feed mills near me, otherwise I would probably go that route. I think they have one down by Monroe, but for now, I think I will be going the convenient TSC route. Thanks.
Go with the big bags, whichever one you decide on. Personally, I elected to go with the non-medicated feed. Dumor is made by Purina, if I remember correctly. Just a side note, when I worked at Ford, I had a discussion with a guy to tried to tell me that Expeditions and Navigators were different trucks made in separate factories. Never mid the fact that I was the Final Assembly Engineer for that product line.

Or if they are too young to have enough fat and feathers for body heat, so they are staying where it is a few degrees warmer?
The ducklings were fully feathered before they went outside, can't say what their BMI is though. I've checked on them several times during the day and night and they are not clustered around the heat lamp but it is warmer in the garage than outside. They are also eating well judging from how fast the food bowl gets emptied.

Sometimes I think you just have a week when you wish you would've just stayed in bed with the covers over your head. It just seems like it's one thing after another. It looks like this week belongs to Farmerboy and me. I found out a little while ago my uncle (dad's brother) has died. He had cancer really bad so it was expected, but nevertheless it deflates you when it happens.

OK, got a daffodil i'm trying to I.D. anyone know what kind this is? only info i have is that the few people that had them were also trying to ID, but supposobly this type is super old Has anyone seen a daffodil go to seed? these would be viable seeds if it did.

edited to add that this one has no "cup", just lots of petals!
I'm no expert on these, there are just too many varieties and cultivars to keep track of. Maybe this website can help.

I just used the pyrmethrin drip on the back of the neck to treat mine for lice. Taprock was going to try it for mites, i don't know it she did it or not. The pyrmethrin is around $7 at TSC, and it gets diluted, and can be used as a coop spray too. I treated for the lice, and it takes about 3 days for them to die, and i didn't do anything but drip it on each bird, not the coop or anything. Basically, if it bites, it dies. can't eat the eggs for a long time, though. Unless you buy the ivermectin instead.
PM me if you need the instructions for my remedy.
I have ivermectin that I brought last year for the lice issue, it had worked great! I still have it, and will use it. Most of my birds are not laying yet, and I am only getting about 3 eggs a day from 6 grown hens.

to the whole lot of you. So much bad stuff going on the last couple weeks.

So sorry about your Uncle, teeville.

RaZ, have you found duckling #4 yet?

Fuzzy - Don't know what kind of daffodil that is, but sure is pretty! RaZ probably can answer that for you.

Daron - I had mites in my coop last year. I never saw any on the chickens, but I suppose they had to be there. I just saw them on the walls of the coop. I bug bombed with Adams and dusted the whole coop with Sevin. Then I orally dosed each chicken with Ivermec. Have not had a problem since then. Good luck.

I found this great list of chicken facts here on BYC. Some of it I knew and some of it I didn't. It is great info for a newbie to chickens.
