Got the chicks coming on Wednesday or Thursday, and have a quick question about the brooder lamp. Does it need to be oriented straight up and down w/ the brooder, or can it be at an angle? Also, does it need to be 95 degrees right under the lamp and cooler at the sides or 90's on the sides and 100 degrees + right below the lamp? I have the 250 watt red bulb and if I orient it straight up and down, it is well over 100 degrees directly below the lamp. (approximately 18" from lamp to floor) If I mount it at an angle then it is mid nineties in the middle of the brooder.

Hi everyone, I'm new to hens AND the board.

We are located near Kalamazoo in a small town called Plainwell. Love the country life.

Welcome!

Had a Vorwerk hen go broody so I took her out, placed in in another cage, stuck a half dozen eggs under her. I like feathered incubators.

Vorwerks, blue orpingtons, spangled hamburg. Anyone needing any bantam chicks?
I believe that my little Black Ameracuna is broody too. She was in the nestbox when I closed up the coops tonight and she screamed at me.

The poor little beebers after I wiped most the blood off. Yes, there is still some dried blood splattered across her face, but I didn't want to torment her too much. Hopefully everyone will be less suicidal for the rest of the day.
Aww,

Thank goodness she didn't get one of her eyes. Such big beautiful brown eyes.

You can mount it at an angle, as long as it is still warm enough in its hot spot, and they still have room to escape the heat. Don't worry too terrible much, keep an eye on them for a bit, and they will tell you if it is too hot or too cold. I'm willing to bet you already know this, though, hehe.

Welcome Besjou and Mzkynd! :) Sorry I was late in saying hello!

I started way after WoW came out, I think Burning Crusade was pretty old news by then. My friends (all local) are on Bleeding Hollow which is PVP.
Juise you won't scare me but the others might get uncomfortable with your cred. ;)

Back to catching up!

b737drvr, another bit of advice...make sure that the lamp is very secure in more than one place. Too many fires have gotten started by those heat lamps. When my chicks were in the house they never required any thning higher than a 100 watt bulb. Usually a 75 watt was plenty good enough.

Oh Juise! I understand your pain. My little man (2) can not keep off things and I was just snapping at him to get down off the dining chair. They are mortal enemies since we've had to go to the ER twice in the last year for falling head first into the wood floor. I caught him scaling the front of the cabinets in the kitchen and now there are gates up everywhere to keep from digging around in there.

Poor thing looks a little dazed and the bruise is going to be wicked looking over the next few days.
