I agree that light is helpful for the overall condition of your flock and good ventilation is vital.

I'm sitting here drinking the 1st cup of the 3rd pot of coffee today and will make another pot after supper. Rainy days when I am house bound I do drink a little more coffee. However, I do plan to quit drinking coffee.........the day they slam the lid.

I still have low level headaches nearly every day, but it sure is nice that I am not chugging the coffee so much, they are not near as bad when I miss a cup.

I am not even going to think about quitting coffee until if / when I ever manage to quite smoking. I can't even begin to express the seething hatred I have for that habit and the control is has over me.

I smoked my "last" cigarette today, we will see how far I make it. It's not even 5 yet and I am already rationalizing to myself... "It would be better to cut down a bit more before going cold turkey, that would make it easier, shoot, probably even give a better chance at succeeding, so I should go buy just one more pack, wean down, then quit..." It is easy to see it for what it is, not so easy to resist.

Oh, and love your avatar. Did you make that yourself?

Who are you talking to?

Chicken Grandma - I don't think any of the coops being posted are done yet, I believe they are all planning on having windows and ventilation.

Juise - well lets hope those poor chickens get some light and air! I hope that those folks building coops will search on the BYC site 'OPEN AIR COOPS' they can get an idea of what we are talking about.

Regarding smoking - I have done some work with that type of thing and I find that something is needed to replace the calming effect of the nicotine. There is nothing wrong with finding things at the healthfood store or naturopath, pharmacy or even doctors office to substitute for the cigarette (or any substance we use to calm ourselves, even food). Our body needs something to support the change of habit and stop the cravings. I cannot recommend something but I know there are things out there to help you and I would try them. Good luck. I know what you are doing is really hard.

Oh. XD Yes, it is wet pastel on wet paperboard. Actually I did it on the back of my notebook with water from the drinking fountain while I sat out in the hallway missing my class because I got there too late and they were already in the middle of doing critiques. Which is pretty much the story of my college career.

I am not really sure what to replace it with at this point, but you are right, that makes it a lot easier.

Take all of the money that you spend on cigarettes, save it, and buy yourself something really nice after some time period. That way you have a tangible goal to work towards and you can see the money adding up.

I advocate the ween method. Less stressful on the body. Just slowly work at putting more and more time between cigs. The nice thing... I didn't even know you smoked, so you must not smoke that much. Smell... it wasn't there, ya know what I mean? A lot of people I know who smoke smell like ash trays. I hate that. LOL. I am so glad I quit after my stupid teen years. LOL.

I really don't smoke very much, I just want to be done with it entirely. I used to smoke quite a lot - a couple packs of full flavours a day - before I was pregnant with number 1, and quit completely and immediately. DH quit as well, though it took him a bit longer. As she got older we started to think that we could enjoy one every once in a great while, which very slowly and gradually escalated to a handful a day, until we decided to try for number 2, and again quit. As she got older... well, rinse, repeat.

I currently smoke 3 or 4 a day, so it is nothing like quitting cold turkey from 2 packs a day, there just isn't nearly as much incentive. :) Nova, I only smoke outside, and usually half at a time... glad I am not stinky, lol. Adding up the amount I am not spending on them is a really great idea! I am going to try to keep track. Gives me something to concentrate on.

Edited to add: Nova, The "wean" theory is good... in theory. But in practice it does not work for me. I have been trying to wean down and quit since new years! I have gotten down to one or two a day for a week or two here and there, but then something will happen, or things just get overwhelming, and I no longer care - in that moment - about weaning down, and then I end up back at 3 - 4.
