Hey all, I'm new to this corner of the world. My girls and I recently moved to Vermontville. Where's that?
idunno.gif
Yeah, thats what I said!!

I'm new to this farm thing too, well mostly. I was exposed to farm life as a kid and wanted my kids to have the same experience. You don't see live chickens, turkeys and cows in the city.
I'm hoping to meet a few new people and chat a bit, learn some things and share some too!!

! PS... you're not far from where chickenstock will be held!

Way to go to show you kids where their food comes from! Wish more people would do that!

It's amazing ....A lady at the restaurant we went to Saturday, asked what Cinco de Mayo meant, so of course my DH started a conversation with her, he always starts out with odd things... he told the lady it was also Karl Marx's birthday.....she's like who is that? DH: ummm, he wrote The Communist Manifesto, and is the father of Marxism... she's like, whats that? OMG! Have another drink sweetie! LOL! I think he knew she wasn't that with it and wanted to mess with her a bit.... Never a dull moment around my DH with some of the stuff he comes up with.

Sorry...

here i have rain, rain, rain. Cold drizzle, really. No work, other than mopping out the coop, wanted to plant seeds in the garden, but brrr!

some birds are just naturally more friendly.
Of my hens, i only have one that is truly affectionate, my EE in my avitar. Little rose was, i still miss her. (mini cochin) My other EE goes between thinking i am trying to eat her and then randomly jumps on me for petting, often with no warning. The orpington i raised from a little fuzz, she was only friendly as a tiny chick and once the feathers started coming in, she was all done with that! Puffs up like a turkey, and will rip open your skin even with clothes on! The "mean" red hen was a friend's free range, she enjoys being held and fed treats, but only for about 5 min, then it's off and running. Then there's my roo, who i also raised from a little fuzz, he is also affectionate. He was a friendly chick, stayed friendly. He was the only survivor of the great coon attack of my first flock, he was the only one to go to the little loft i had built them, the RIR refused to leave the goat house and all got ate. :( Of the 6 of those girls, only one didn't take off running when they saw me, though they were sweet as babies.

So basically if you sit down around here you will have either my "basketball" hen in your lap, or my roo, usually if one goes up the other one follows. They just wait for me to tire and sit, then they mug me, lol. They don't usually leave each other's side, the roo will only leave her if i am there to watch her. :) I pretty much leave the others alone.

The orpington is going broody, possibly! I haven't seen her budge yesterday or today, i know she takes forever to lay an egg, but.......

I noticed the other day that she had plucked her chest feathers.... she is coming on a year also, i hope i don't lose another one. I put my baskeball hen's eggs (cocoa) and my rose's eggs under her, though they probably aren't viable. (this was my mini cochin that died brooding) I am only going to try to hatch eggs from those girls, i'm hoping for more lap babies.

I am still unsure whether i will let her actually raise them, though, since she is so mean and would probably tell all the babies bad things about me, lol.
