I have no idea. My 9 weekers don't have heat on right now or last night. They seem fine. The Bantys still have heat but they are much younger.

???

Oh well, gonna call it a night. I finally convinced my aunt to come over to check out all the native flowers in my area, she was blown away by it all. I think my friend's property is as good as a nature preserve, my aunt even found jack in the pulpit's that i didn't see, and a few other types of ferns, too. We took lots of pics, i am a bit dehydrated and pooped, we walked around for hours! :)

Has anyone ever heard of the tax credit that you get for property if it is a nature/wildlife shelter?
I heard about it a few years ago, but don't remember what it is called. I think if i could help show my friend that what she has is special, that they will take it serious and protect their plants.

Right now she has no idea, and kids/dogs/friends are tromping on the jacks and columbine, and whatnot.

Hmm. My bantie's are 6 weeks, i thought that was OK

What a day....Yay...We got a good portion of the garden planted. I can't wait for the fresh lettuce and we planted extra melons for the chickens!! We always seem to have plenty and always share the extra produce with our family. Of course they have to come out & pick it!
OK, stupid question. At what age can you put chicks out without a heat lamp? I don't have electric in my coop....... Is it warm enough being in the high 50's?????????

I think they should be fine if they most of their feathers, they'll be in a coop, sheltered & they'll huddle in a ball if they are chilled.

Either my chicks are cold, or terrified of the dark..... (everyone else is panting) Anyone else ever have a batch of chicks be scared of the dark? I have never had this happen.

This last batch I had was. I think it was Squirt who was scared. Once she got crying the other 3 joined in...what a ruckus. I ended up putting a real dim flash light in the coop window. Each night I turned it off a little earlier and earlier. Only did this for a week at the max. Once it was warm enough & I moved the tractor outside she was fine. The garage was pretty dark, outside they have some light from the moon & stars.

VJ.....the gate looks great.

Gotta post a pic of Lil' Blu

Tee... Patience is a virtue I hope you have in abundance right now...
Sigh...one that I tend to sorely lack. So far I'm doing ok with DD since I know it's the med causing her weaning issues. On the other hand, her brother and sister not watching what they say around her...

Last night I said this was going to be a long week and I wasn't kidding. We have had our first mystery coop death.

We were getting the chickens in when my youngest DD called out to me that something was wrong with one of the red chickens. I got to the coop and found one of my rhodies on the floor dead. I have absolutely no idea what happened to her. I looked her over, but there was nothing that caught my attention. No puncture wounds, no loss of feathers, no sign of mites/lice, nothing. She was just over a year old so I'm wondering if she maybe had an egg bound issue? I have no idea what that looks or feels like so I can only guess. I was working most of the day so if she was acting off, I wouldn't have known. Sigh...

RIRJEN....Cool looking chickens. How do you keep them so white.....Are these some of the ones you show?
I haven't shown any of these, they are just babies. :) The showgirl in the first picture is from my first hatch of the year in January so she's a little older. No secret to keeping them white, they do it on thier own. I bath them before the show but these ones have never been washed. I'll have to get a picture of them sometime after it rains though!!! My pretty birds look like drowned rats!
