Did you worm the whole flock? I am going to go against the flow, and suggest you get yourself some equimax horse paste wormer ASAP. If i remember correct it had ivermectin in it, it will kill all kinds of worms and should kill any lice or mites as well, which your neighbor's chickens may have come home from the auction with.

Worming individuals "as needed" may be optimal, but unless you have the $$$ to get them all tested, you will not know their exact worm load. Different hens may react to worms different, but they have all been exposed. Some worms will take all the nutrition and they will starve to death, some suck blood and make them anemic, some are so tiny they can swim in the capillaries and shut off blood flow! I have seen people advised to do the "regular" wormer first in the case of a severe case, so the worms don't all die at once and clog the hen up.

PM me if you want. I wish i could come over! Definitely give her some of the showbird, if you still have some. I would only feed her that until she perks up, at least a day or two. Or get some liquid vitamins.

Speaking of worming, I spent several hours yesterday catching and orally dosing my chickens with 1/2 ml Ivomec. I lost a hen Monday night to what I believe was worms. She had been having watery diarrhea and then laid two shelless eggs. I finally caught her Monday night and cleaned her butt up, trimmed the feathers and pulled out the rest of an egg that was hanging from her vent. Since this was the first time I had held her I didn't realize how thin she had gotten. I put her in a carrier and tried to get her to eat some oatmeal but she wasn't interested. I finally covered her up and decided to try again in the morning. Around 2:00 a.m. I heard her banging around in the carrier and knew she was in her death throws. I checked and she had passed. Poor girl. I had wormed them in May and since no one else was showing symptoms I thought she was just prone to diarreah. She acted normal in every other way. No eye or nose discharge, eyes clear, feathers good, no lice or mites, eating with everyone else and drinking good. Well, I thought no one was showing symptoms, but also read that a pale comb and wattle can also be a sign of worms and one of my Marans hens does have that. So, yesterday after dosing everyone I came back in the house and spent some time on BYC re-reading what I could find on worming. Now I have read that Ivermectin is not the best for worming, but Valbazen and Safeguard used alternately gets every kind of worm they could have. Dawg on the Emergency and Diseases thread is pretty knowledgeable as well as several others. See https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/576036/necropsy-results-is-not-coryza-or-crd-parasites-are-rampant/80. So, in 10 days I will retreat with Valbazen and hope I get them cleaned out. Anyway, I was also burning two huge piles of brush from the oak tree that finally fell into my pond. Instead of burying the hen I threw her on the fire and cremated her. A half hour later my neighbor calls to tell me that my chicken on the grill is killing her! I did smell good.

Edited to say IT did smell good, I didn't.

I also forgot to ask, does anyone here have experience with "hanging tongue syndrome" in dogs? I have a toy poodle that has a severe case of it. Vet said it will never improve and to give her chicken broth and a few drops of olive oil on her tongue. I'm just wondering if anyone else has any experience that could help.

I rescued her and her sister 5 years ago from an extremely severe puppy mill. They were proud to tell me they had 57 dogs in the house and another 40 some running around the backyard. Mimi went blind at 3 years and now this. She still eats fine and loves to play and cuddle so I don't think she's in pain.

Yes, I turned the place in.

Does she have her front teeth? We sometimes saw that at the shelter with dogs that had very rotten (or no) front teeth.
She's dead. A rusty butter knife once used by Columbus himself will work if it's what you've got.

Ha!

I gave ya'll a chance.
I even went and got siding for the garage and stopped for a few groceries.

Now who wants to help unload the trailer?

I never heard that the symptoms of worms was laying shellless eggs. That is a new one. Are you sure that is correct?

Ah! You have been reading posts by some people on BYC that appear to have a real vested interest in an older drug called Valbazen. My vet said that that is an older drug that can cause kidney and liver damage. A newer version of that type of wormer is called Fenbendazole and it kills the same worms without the liver/kidney damage to the animal. Also, do you know that you have to stop eating the eggs for 2 weeks with Valbazen and then you have to treat your chickens a second time to be sure it works? Also, have you priced it? It's expensive.

The vets at Michigan State University told us that Ivermectin is a safe wormer for chickens and that you do not have to discard the eggs at all. If you think you still have worms in your flock after having treated with Ivermectin, why don't you find a vet to check a stool sample for you and see? That way you can save the money for the Valbazen, not damage your flock's liver/kidneys unnecessarily and not throw out 4 weeks worth of eggs. Seems like a stool/poop check would be a bargain if that is what you are facing.

Also, be careful folks of people pushing certain products on here. There could be financial motives.
