I love it. Despite having craploads of (quite successful) competitors, Microsoft is described as a monopoly, despite the fact that, by definition, a monopoly cannot have any competitors.
it well be up to the Manufacter, but yes they are trying to control what you install.

Why? The Kernel in *nix is much more secure then windows. Windows fragments soo much faster then any OS.
DUCKY! You are talking a duel boot situation. You can always whack the partition, and redo it, make your swap part, format the whole mess and do a clean install of ANY operating system.
That microsoft hasn't been dismantled through a major antitrust settlement is just - I hate microsoft too. Evidently the main focus of the company over the past few years has been to try and see how many different ways they can charge you more for everything. A Jay and Silent Bob quote that starts 'I hate them...' is appropriate.
It is actually still possible for you to install another operating system, it just takes a little more work.
A friend of mine once asked me if 'Microsoft is like, you have a Microsoft camera, and you need to buy only Microsoft film?'
And I said, no, actually, it's like you have a Microsoft car and you have to have a microsoft garage, a microsoft house, a microsoft yard, a microsoft dog, a microsoft cat, microsoft children, microsoft food, microsoft carpet, microsoft chickens, and a micro soft chicken coop, and ......
With Apple, you HAVE to buy their prebuilt computers, and you can't do any hardcore gaming on an Apple computer. I prefer to build my computers from scratch, which means I can choose to install whatever version of Windows I want, too. I love being able to build a computer, it is so much cheaper than walking into Best Buy or whathaveyou and buying something off the shelf. AND it means that I don't have to deal with all the crapware that comes on prebuilt computers, it makes mine a blank slate that I can do as I please.
