Mid march hatch a long

I just set some today. I've got 12 black easter eggers (in BLUE eggs, I love blue!) that a friend gave me. :) My husband and I want to increase our flock size this summer. I'm so excited! Best of all, this friend is going to take the roos off of my hands! I have one 2 year old Rhode Island Red, three 2 year old Silverlaced Wyandottes and four red sex links who just turned 1! :)

Mabhera,
if you get welsummer chicken eggs you can tell ( most of the time what one are girls and what ones are boys by the way they look when they hatch out. Or do a search on here for sex link information, it will tell you what breeds to cross to be able to tell the sex of the chicks when they hatch by the way they look, is not allways 100% but is better than waiting until they crow or lay an egg !

I'm just want to have eggs with cute colors. I really want the black cooper marans...silly me. With this breed i or buying them as chicks to a breeder and pay a lot for unsexed chickens or buy eggs and hatch them. Also, hatching them gives me the chance to see the egg color. I was sure I was not going to get addicted...well , I'm not so sure now. I can usually tell the sex by the month or month and a half. The problem is what to do with all the extra males. Don't want to cull them. Don't want to give them to someone unless they are going to keep them. I' dont dare to kill them...
What egg color can I get from a welsummer chicken?

Tomorrow I will be setting 18 Delaware X hamp eggs, then Wednesday or Thursday i will be setting 20 or so Barred Rock (shipped eggs) And then next Wednesday or Thursday I will be setting 12 or so Delawares (more shipped eggs) Just got a second bator to be used only as a hatcher. I got it so I can stagger hatches and keep a constant lockdown environment in it. I just finished a hatch that went badly at the end (out of 34 set only 7 hatched and two of those were helped and may still not make it) and I believe it was in the first 12 hours of lockdown. I had 18 the were fully developed but did not pip. and a couple that pipped that didn't make it. BUT at least I learned something

I know what you mean about a poor hatch. My 1st try was a bad one. Had bought eggs off of ebay. The rest of the hatches went well, guess the shipping does anumber on eggs, I got a few the 1st time.

Has anyone else candled yet? I did mine this morning. My favorelle eggs and purchased silkie eggs almost all seem to be developing! The silkie eggs from my girls don't seem to to fertile tho. I just put the boys in there a couple of weeks ago tho. Maybe they need to "date" first.

... the easiest way to turn them would be to take an egg carton, remove the top flap that closes the carton ... put your eggs in ... whats left of the egg carton and put something under one end or side ... to elevate it, This way you can change which end of the carton is elevated several ( 2 - 3 times ) per day, in effect turning the eggs ...

This is how I turn the eggs that are waiting to go into the incubator. Works great!

8 silkie eggs of 14 are showing good growth..one has a blood ring..only 1 of the lakenvelder eggs has veining..sure hope it makes it. sucks only 1 of 15 eggs is showing any growth though..dang it!

I have set 24 eggs in my home made inc. I set so many because I am sure a lot will not be fertile. I have to many hens for my roo. He has some favorites and seems to ignore a lot of them Just too many so he acts like he doesn't care. LOL My eggs are going to be 21 days on the 15th of March. This is my first time so I am not expecting much. The temp seems to be holding well and humidity in the high 20s. I hope I can get that up high enough for the final 3 days. It is exciting but I am trying to keep the hope down. I don't want to be too disappointed. I will candle on Fri and see if I can tell anything.
